This is Jon.
I play guitar in Wayne Graham. I wanted to write something for anyone who reads our updates and blogs. I've been playing bass for 6 years and just recently really got into playing guitar thanks to Kenny and friends dumping the responsibility of "LEAD GUITAR" on a guy who knew next to nothing about playing "lead" in the sense of the word.. I'm a tone freak and a gear head now though. I'm your basic guitar junkie, except I don't like to Steve Vai, Joe Satriana, or Bucket Head. That seems to be the given artist list that all guitar players I know draw from, but our base of operations is dominated by goof-metal.
I draw heavy inspiration from some strange characters. I love a good country guitar solo with a lot of slow bends that imitate the lap-steel. I should probably just become a lap-steel player. Jack White, John Gourley, and Nels Cline all drive me to delve deeper into the creative aspects of guitar playing. Being unable to blare a flurry of notes at the speed of light has often deterred my confidence, but I believe this no longer an indifference. I really look for a deeper way to fit into a song besides flashing my lead chops.GE Smith gave me another way to look at guitar. It was a simplified way to warm a song. Though Smith was a master telecaster-blaster I could see his style in many of his collaborations with Bob Dylan being an ideal starting place to lay foundations for Wayne Graham's laid back and wispy lead licks and overtones. I wish more people could find this area of thought when analyzing the art of playing lead. Enough of that!
Flashback
Kenny and I began playing music together about 6 years ago in a band called Thusia. We had met through mutual friends and I pounced on the chance to play with such a talented group of musicians. Thusia ended when members moved away and puppy loved stirred. People were lost. We lost friends. We lost everything we had worked for and I was crushed. We were making musical progress in spite of the negative relationships that were beginning to take foothold within the group.
Time passed. A lot of time.
I lost interest in music for a time. Probably the most depressing 2 years of my life. No musical ventures, no contact with other musicians besides the metalites, and way to many hours pumped into useless video games. When Kenny invited me back to join his new group I was surprised to find I wouldn't be playing bass. Charlie had already settled that position. I'm not a guitar player, never was. I'd play bass in every band ever up to this point. Suddenly a month later we were playing our first gig as a full band with me playing guitar live in front of people for the very first time. It's so comfortable now.
Now
Nothing is more satisfying that playing with this group. As long as I have a way to get there and guitar to play I'll be here with Wayne Graham. Hopefully you know me just a little better. Get to know the other guys soon because I'm going to force them to do this sort of thing for you.
