At the Speed of a Tree

Tuesday, Nov 22 @ 1:11 PM

Hi all,

FLOATSTONE is working on recordings for a new album. It will be titled 'Speed of Tree'. The songs are being recorded in France at a leisurely pace, giving room for expanding the view on the songs involved. There is no deadline that is anyway comparable to the one our planet's biosphere is facing. 'Speed of Tree' will greatly focus on where we stand today as a species, and how to deal with our plight and our future. It will be a call for action as much as it will be a eulogy to what we will lose in the process. Songs will be released one at a time and at one point the album will be released as a whole. Some beautiful guest appearances will complement the truly bare bone versions that are being recorded. All recording sessions are being filmed by FLOATSTONE's Partner in Art CYLEONG.be and will serve as the basis for the video clips. Be well.

Communicate!

Yesterday was Music Day.

Which basically means I made no music at all. Music Day consists of writing, reading and answering emails, contacting people by phone. It’s not like my songs will just spread their wings and leave the nest all by themselves once they have come to maturity. Putting out a CD all on my own (well almost) asks for skills and talents that go beyond the writing of that refrain I really like. Skills that come easy to some. Not to me.

Believe it or not, a CD is considered to be a ‘product’. And a musician is actually a ‘brand’. Definitions that defy and deny everything that makes me a musician.

But for now, so be it. So all trepidation out the window. Communicate! And all the while stay true to myself. Don’t procrastinate. And don’t prostitute myself.

And if the burden of overcoming inherent timidity is reaching its limits, I follow the sound advice on the cover of the best selling hitchhiker’s guide in the galaxy. In case I tend to forget it I have put it on my mobile phone screen: DON"T PANIC

Come PRE-pared!

Yesterday I spent some truly valuable time pre-pre-mastering (no, it’s not a typo) tracks at Foon in Lier.

It was great getting the feel of what mastering will and will not do to a mix before heading out later with the total CD for pre-mastering and mastering. Lots of talk of dynamic range, frequency analyzing, compression redundancy and other tantalizing terms.

But actually, lots of listening.

The wall on the left holding the speakers is just a skin of fabric, by the way. Behind it sits 36 cubic metres of air. Some speaker systems r just very hard to set up in ur own living room.

My ears were smiling. Good signs.

Countdown!

In the Air...

I have been playing a lot of Open Mics this month and enjoying the response to what I do tremendously.

Amsterdam seems to like me a Lot. Heading there on friday for my first Netherlands'full concert.

In between recordings I have been a guest on a Local TV show here. I played two songs and was interviewed, all aired live.

Also, I just got invited to be interviewed and play on Amsterdam FM radio station in June. So FLOATSTONE seems to be hitting the air waves more and more.

Now where is that CD? It is in the making. Taking my time to make something that will stand out seems more inmportant to me than being quick about doing a 'yeah well' disk. :)

Life is busy. Also with trying out new techniques on the guitar. The most peculiar sounds have been coming out lately and they seem to mingle well with my newer compositions. My guitars sound ever better and they look ever worse for wear and tear. I seem to become a guitarcionist, somehow. The guitars gain miles in a street credible look and the music becomes ever more personal.

So I am not complaining at all.

Generate Goodness y'all.

I get a Gig out of U...

The counter top concert at 't Ey was great! Seldom did I get such a respectful welcome. Small stage in the bar, great PA with a detailed attention to the sound, lights and an audience that came solely to watch me perform. A true highlight on my travels so far. Reactions were heart warming too. And since the video os Birthday Present went online, I have had more reactions from people who were there.

Played an Open Mic at Lava café in Brussels. A new initiative. It could do with a little more technical equipment and some light, but it has a nice potential.

Played Magic Mirrors again in Brussels. A last minute call and that showed in audience turn up. A little weird to play such a wonderful venue when it's all but empty. Life on the road, I guess.

Tonight I am heading for Amsterdam and meeting music people at Hotel V's First Monday event. Checking out what that is all about. I am bringing my guitar just in case there's a spot on stage for me tonight. If not it'll be PR night. It takes that kind of work too.

I'll be heading for the Netherlands again soon after that: I just booked my first solo concert outside Belgium!

:)

In Between Gigs

I played my first Gent gig two nights ago. Los Perros Calientes was smoky and filled with friendly people. My fetish globe fit nicely in its interior. Enjoyed the coziness, got nice feedback. The names of artists people are comparing me with after gigs lately (!) are a true boost for the heart and like extra concrete for building more and more confidence. A little too humble to just put them on here, but believe me, being compared to one musical hero after another is a trip in itself.

Tonight I am heading for 't Ey in Belsele, an independent music centre with a heart for Folk music. It'll be a countertop concert. An in your face (or mine) experience for sure.

If u r anywhere near, I start at 8pm. Be well, Brick

Saw Gabriel Rios live.

Yesterday I went and saw Gabriel Rios play live at Waregem. Truly enjoyed Jeff Taylor as support act. Involved and true, simple and beautiful. Gabriel Rios, Jef Neve and Kobe Proesmans then went on to blow me away. The richness, the nuance, the palette of musical styles and vibes. The total humble honesty in combination with excellence of performance. I bow in respect and am thankful for inspiration gained.
