In 1904 my Grandma Tillie (my Mom's mom) was 16 years old - she lived in Russia, in what is now known as Ukraine, with her parents in a small village near Odessa, where she worked in a glass factory. She and her older sister decided to travel to America to try to make a better life for themselves, because they were Jews living under the harsh rule of Czar Nicholas II. Knowing they would never see their parents again, the brave sisters purchased tickets for a train that would take them and many other Jews over the border into Europe and across the continent to Amsterdam, where they would take a ship across the Atlantic to New York. They went to the train station and waited with other passengers for the train, but the train never came. Instead Russian soldiers arrived - someone yelled "run for the trees", which were across a huge meadow. As the soldiers began shooting, everyone ran across the meadow past the trees, where they discovered a raging river. Since her sister couldn't swim, Tillie carried her on her back across the river. Exhausted upon reaching the other side, both sisters passed out. They were each subsequently found by villagers who took them to two separate small villages to recuperate - they were reunited 3 days later. With no more train tickets as an option, they had to work their way across Europe, but eventually, through sheer determination, reached Amsterdam, where they began the journey across the Atlantic to the promised land of America to begin the lives of new immigrants in New York City. My Grandma Tillie had 4 children, was married three times, and passed away 33 years ago at the age of 93. My Mom Sophie was born in 1918, the youngest of the 4 children, married my Dad Gershon in 1936, and they had 3 children. My parents were married for almost 71 years when my Dad died in 2008 at the age of 94 1/2, and Mom passed away in 2011 at the age of 93.

This Throwback Thursday enjoy the musical journey of "My Grandparents Came To America", my piano solo composition honoring Tillie and Jacob Levine (my Mom's parents) and Pauline and Jacob Spivack (my Dad's parents), who all immigrated to the USA at the turn of the 20th century from their Russian birthplaces, across Europe to Amsterdam, then across the Atlantic by ship for the long voyage to New York City. If you listen carefully you can hear the waves of the ocean as my Grandparents depart and arrive, their doubts, courage and excitement of such a dangerous and rewarding undertaking, and the pride of becoming a citizen of their new home country.
