My First House Concert is Coming Up

Hello Everyone

In one weeks time my friends Karen and Bill and putting on a house concert in their home, and I am the one giving the concert. I fell so fortunate and honoured by these friends who are supporting me this way.. I am so excited I can't sleep.

What is a house concert you ask? Well imagen sitting in a comfy chair, with your fav beverage and friends. You say hello to them, share a bit and then the music starts. No electronics, no sound boosting, just the wonderful sound of acoustic guitars played well and the ringing of a voice filled with passion, drama and stories. Songs and stories being performed so close you could touch me. You get every tickle of the stirngs. Every sound and note is real and for you. Then there is an intermission where you get to visit with your friends again. Talk about anything you wish and enjoy the wonderful snacks that are there. Maybe refill that beverage again and visit with the musician you were just listening to. Then I do it again.

Here is a link to what I am talking about.me and my music

Hi Everybody Well I have been playing a lot, touring a little, and missing home like blazes. I left home Friday and went to Salt Spring Island where i meet the guys from 107.9 FM CFSI. They run a station that is ad revenue driven on Salt Spring and they do it pretty well from all accounts. We had a good visit and I even got to do a station ID for them. Cool huh? ON another note a real close friend Scott Parsons was nominated for an award by the ECMA (East Coast Music Association) but they declined to have him showcase. Scott posted this on FaceBook and received much support from all his friends online. Well now he does get a showcase and has been invited to even more shows as a result. This is the power of friendship and media I told you about Scott because I wanted to thank all of you who have helped me in my music. Many have been to my online sales and made purchases. Thank you. Some have wrote emails to folk that I haven't heard from before that resulted in my getting performance opportunities that I would not have gotten otherwise. Thank you. Very many of you write me and send me your support that way. Thank you. Every day something seems to be happening and most of the time I can't trace it back to the source. So I will say thank you here in this email/blog. Thank You one and all. Without your support I am just a guy who plays guitar like a million others. With your support I am a performing musician who is able to share his music and may even be able to pay bills and have a life. Thank you. I sometimes find it difficult to believe that I am so lucky. See you all some time sooner or later Jim

Part 1 I am back in Victoria /Memphis...still trying to catch up...holy crap!

Hi Everybody. I actually got back about a week ago and have been trying to get caught up with contact info and friends new and old every sense. I wanted to do it ASAP while I was still a picture in their minds eye or a sound in their minds ear. :-)

Ya know it's a good thing I don't work as a secretary for a big-wig in an office 'cause the file system I created (see last blog) left a lot to be desired. Sure it was quick and simple (to things I really like) but it did have one small flaw. Me. Somewhere between the last person I met in Memphis and my trying to get everything done at home I simply forgot that things were in a pocket for a reason and started to stuff them all together. :-( I can only hope that it was a tired, exhausted, road weary Jim who did it 'cause I really don't remember. OH well! I think it was during my last sleep at the ferry terminal in Tsawwassen. I will tell you about that in a bit...

From the last blog till I arrived at Tsawwassen I didn’t stop except to eat and gas up. Yup, all the Way from Salt Lake Utah in one lonnnnggggggggg drive. How cool is that. I gotta admit what really made it all easy was the CD I was listening to almost the whole time. A guy named Brian Kalinec. I met him at the conference. Ya see, I was lucky enough to catch Doug Cox with his Duo partner Bettysoo She sang and played guitar real well and Doug made it go over the top with his slide. Nice stuff and I really liked it. I did ask how he has a duo with a partner who lives 2000 miles away. “Must be killer on rehearsals?” I asked. Doug just gave one of those big grins he’s famous for,  and told me to say to hear the next guy and that is how I met Brian Kalinec. Brian and I swapped CDs and every song on his 6 song release got me. It’s been years sense I heard music that made me wish I had written it, let alone 6 of ‘em all at once but these did. Check him out at Brian J Kalinec in Facebook and Reverbnation too. (see part 2 below I have a # characters limit)

Part 2.. am back in Victoria from Memphis...

So here I am, driving through the night and taking roads that go either north or west, when I suddenly realize that I am in a snow storm. I turn on the radio and get Portland talking about being ready for this BIG Storm that is on the way. I start thinking oh oh.. My GPS tells me I am in Washington State and heading through the Yakima Pass. But within a few minutes the sky was clear; it was real cold and about 4 inches on hard packed snow on this multi-lane highway. There was still considerable traffic and I was passed by several vans full of skiers heading away from the ski hills I had just passed. I hunkered down a respectable distance behind a big heavy semi and counted about 8 vans full of skiers slid of the side of the road into soft big snow banks looking for a tow. I could not believe how clear it was. All the snow made everything seem so incredibly bright and beautiful and all I could do was drive, listen to tunes, sing and be glad I grew up in Ontario winters where I learned to drive in snow. That and being grateful for all wheel drive and a heater  . I started to feel real tired but got excited again when I saw a sign saying Vancouver! I kept going. Crossed back into Canada without incident and made my way to the ferries at 4I kept going. Crossed back into Canada without incident and made my way to the ferries at 4 am. Slept. The rest was a simple trip home except for all the snow. Man! I leave for less than 2 weeks and the whole place goes to hell.  This brings me back to my opening about taking so long to get caught up. The truth is after driving something like 8000 kms, 5 showcases, booth manning for 4 days, and all the wonderful excitement, new friends and old, I just slept for about 3 days. I know I didn’t really sleep for that long I mean I was up and about but it took me days to come out of the fog. But fog has lifted. The best The trip was a huge success to me. I have over a hundred folks to contact. Emails to write, calls to make, gigs to book and the best part, songs to learn... I can hardly wait till next year….or maybe the year after when International Folk Alliance will be in Toronto Ont. Anyway, this closes it for the tales of Memphis. Wish I could have brought you all with me. Talk again soon. As always if you want to pass on my blurbs its OK and you can write me at jim@jimmoffatt.ca Cheers Jim

What happened in Memphis sure won't stay there

Hi Everybody At this moment I am sitting in a restaurant in 6 hours from Salt Lake City. I have driven here from Memphis in about 20 hrs and boy is I tired. BUT!!!! I would do this again in a heart beat. Here is the skinny on what happened...all real good :-) On Thursday I meet more people than I could keep track of by writing on their cards. So I invented a file system in my pack. This pocket for agents, that one for artistic directors etc. etc... Good thing I have a good memory and lots of pockets. My booth in the exhibit hall was a real success. I meet many people whom I would not have if I was just showcasing. I gave out close to 150 promo packs and the very best thing happened... ON Thursday I attended two panels that I thought were real important. The first was a panel of artistic directors who hire for there perspective festivals. They had collected a large number of CDs from us and you can't imagine my joy when they played mine. There had to be 300 CDs in that box and I got played. Not only that but they liked my music enough that Doug Cox Confirmed me for his festival in 2012 and another gentleman will be calling me later to confirm with his festival. I think I need to apply for a grant for his as it’s on the east coast in the US. (I have a big Grin) :-) The second was a panel of house concert holders and tour arrangers and again out of literally hundreds I got played and they too liked what they heard. Only one said he wouldn't hire me because I didn't fit in with his style but he even said he had a friend and has recommended me. And the comments! Lots of friendly jokes and people telling me to go get a lottery tickets, it’s been my lucky day. Were they ever jealous in a real loving and supportive way. I can't begin to explain how good it feels to get such positive feedback from pros/peers. But this wasn't the best part, at least not in my musically sense... David Blumberg gave the opening talk and accepted an award. I got to sit right in the front on the far left of his podium and when it was time for him to play he came right over past the mics and lights and sat down 4 feet in front of me and played 2 songs. I actually got to meet him and talk. WOW |Even with all the good stuff I really miss Jan and home. Yup this being free and on the road isn't all its cracked up to be. Yet still.... Jim

Thursday moring in Memphis

I just finished my call in the CBC radio and the "All Points West" show. If you are in the BC area give it a listen and you'll hear me! If you can't then call in to their shows number and ask to hear me. The number is 250 414 4712 and you will talk to either Kelly or Jo-Anne. Well, What a day yesterday was. I got up at abut 930 am and was on the phone to a garage to get my car in, get it repaired, set up my display table in the auditorium and prepare to play my first showcase in the "Texas sugar baby room". AT 6:30 last night they handed me my keys and a bill. Turns out that front wheel bearing were burnt out and had to be replaced. Garage guy took some of the sting out of the 850$ bill by telling me it was good thing fixed or the wheels may have fallen off before I got home. :-) And it turns out the displays weren't set up yesterday either but will be up at 1 pm today. Seems I didn't miss that either. :-) So I did my first show case and it was a hit! I played to a group of about 10 and then another 5-6 coming and going. it turned out that 2 were agents/Artistic Directors and they both took PR kits and that is a good sign. After being so stressed and upset about the car and with so much to do I didn't even eat yesterday. So when I finished my show I dragged my butt to the car and crawled in and sleep better than I have in a few days. Good sleep. Today I have another show case, I attend a few shows, set up and smooze at my table. I am so happy to be here. I have meet many people already and its just getting started. The people and the volunteers affectionaly refert to today at "Crazy Day 1, and it only get more from here" Talk to you all again soon. Jan I miss you and our home. JIm

Memphis! WOW!

I pulled in at about 4 pm today. Its has been a long drive and I think it was harder on the vehicle than me. I did an oil change about 1000 km ago and the garage attendant told me at the time to get the seals on the axles checked when i got back to canada as they were starting to leak. As I was driving around downtown Memphis I noticed a loud humming coming from the front and I think that was the axle making noise cause the fluid is leaked out. I will get it checked / fixed before i leave but not today. Maybe tomorrow before the place goes crazy. It could also be the new tires at 38psi What a difference in the mileage! :-) Tomorrow the genie is out of the bottle. Tonight Jimmy is going to sleep.

Well Toto we are back in Kansas

Hi Everyone I am sitting at a coffee shop just off the highway about 14 hrs out of Memphis Tenn. I spent another day driving yesterday and slept in the truck. It was comfortable enough with lots of pillows but I got real lonely. I miss my Jan. Heck I even missed that damn dog for about a min then I realized that there would not be enough room with the dog there and in my next thought the dog was gone. :-) I get lots of time to think will all this driving time. Thinking is good but then I start to get self doubt and that isn't. In case you don't know what I am doing I am driving from Victoria BC to Memphis Tenn to attend and showcase in the "International Folk Alliance" conference. I start to question the wisdom of doing this whe3n I am tired and last night was particularly difficult. Then I remembered something that my best friend once said to me when we were sitting beside a wrestling mat at the nationals and I was getting ready to battle a guy who was ranked 3rd in the Country. He said "Jimmy you aren't the fastest wrestler here or the strongest, hell brother you sure aren't the smartest but....you are far greater than the sum of your parts." I won. I know I am not the flashiest guitar player, or the most talented singer and I still have my best songs inside of me. I know this. But I am by far, better than the sum of my parts and i plan on kicking some serious butt. I am going to have fun too. :-) Jim

No room for self doubt there Mr. Moffatt!!!! You are on the road to where you want to be! You got into that festival because of your talent and now you are going to show them live, in person, what you are made of. You are not alone. You have our friendship, love and belief right there beside you. FEEL the belief in yourself and go there and have some fun!

blogging to International folk Alliance

Hi Everybody. Its now 2 hours more to Salt Lake City. There I plan to stop and visit my old and best friend Walter B. for a couple of hours then back on the road to International folk Alliance and Memphis TN!!!

The roads have been beautiful, dry and right now its 11 C outside bright and sunny.

I slept in the truck for the first time last night. Was pretty comfy too. I have my love Janice to thank for that as she lent me her vehicle to make the trip. Oh my lover I wish you were here too then this trip would be perfect.

I have to keep this short and sweet but i did receive a very cool email for Robyn T-D who is "doing a panel called "the Art of Songwriting on Thursday at 2 pm and has asked me to Join...cool!

See you all later Gotta go

Jim

Folk Alliance and a Gig

He Everybody In 6 Days and 7 hrs I will hop in my car. The seats will all be laid down and it will be open from the front seat passenger side to the trunk. That half will serve as my bed. On the driver side it will have my guitars, guitar stand, cloths, harmonicas, promotion items for the exhibit and anything else I think I might need for a 4 day trip to Memphis and then 5 days doing showcases there in the conference and 4 days back. That means I should be back by the 24th. Good thing Cause I have a gig on the 25th back in Victoria. Memphis Tennessee is a long way from home. :-).

What is the International Folk Alliance? It is a gathering of people who support and perform folk music from across North America and the world. There will be 2200 of us there and more than half of them are supporters.

I am lucky enough to be playing a showcase every day of the event and hosting an information table too. With any luck this is the type of event where I will create a buzz and people will get to hear my music. If all goes well I will make the relationships that will lead to gigs and tours to support my music habit.

Wish me luck. jim@jimmoffatt.ca

I will be tweeting and blogging during the event and trying to keep you all posted as to what is happening. I have even been talking to CBC about doing interviews and a story about paying your dues in music.

This is going to be fun

Jim

PS Happy Birthday Jordan
