Battle of the Bands at The Crazy Neighbour

First off I’ll say that the Crazy Neighbor did a great job hosting the Battle of the Bands. The improvements to the stage and sound were pretty decent and I’d love to get drunk there when I’m not playing. Of course there’d have to be a decent band playing. The Daze were not competing in the Battle. To give the judges some time to determine the winner of the event, we got to play last. The first time we were not an opening band. I think the fact that Jason put on the show, had a slight influence on things. I don’t have the exact numbers but there had to be 100 there while we were playing. That’s a big crowd to us…seriously. It’s like level one of Guitar Hero. We ripped through our set pretty smoothly with only minor screw-ups, but nothing too notable. I missed my queue for the bass intro for Hot Shot, Ian and I started Mr. Fame without Jason and I also missed a note or two in Forgot. All around, I think we played great and I really like The Crazy Neighbor for a venue. One interesting occurrence was the drunken old guy in the Montreal Canadians jacket, dancing up a storm in front of everybody. I swear he did the same thing last time we played. It was very awesome and I hope he was photographed doing his lovely jig. As for the Battle of the Bands, this was an amazing event, and shows like this should happen much more often. Kudos to Jason for organizing the event. I always knew Jay had a lot of contacts, but to put something like this together is pretty impressive. So, four bands, one plethora of prizes. Here’s what the winners took home. PRIZES Thanks to Ken Perry for donating a Photo shoot. http://www.kenperry.ca/ Thanks to Robert Gallant for the video shoot. Robert Gallant is the guy behind The Cockeyed Adventures of Denim Dugay which is hilarious shit. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LER9cTZm5gM Robert Gallant says this ..whoever wins the video….we are very serious about putting alot of work into this. We don’t want to film you at a show, we want to make a proper music video….for your myspace page, to send out to channels, whatever you want to do with it….its yours. Thanks to Dave Skinner for the 4 hours of studio time at Lukas Raine Recordings. http://lukasrainerecordings.com/ KwikKopy donated digital printing of 100 full color posters, text weight. A show at Babas Lounge Thanks to Ryan Abdallah with a 100 dollar guarantee. A one night room at The Hampton Inn and Suites Moncton. Plus a cash prize. To me, that’s pretty impressive. So the first band up was Sunnyvale. A very talented rock trio from Summerside. If you haven’t heard them, check out a clip of them here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h54SBSjY7jI Next up was Struck who is a four piece classic rock band from Charlottetown. Jamie Doucette is the guitarist and is amazing. If you watch him play, he makes guitar look easy. He should be on the G3 tour, seriously. If you enjoy guitar, you’ll be blown away by Struck. Check our their MySpace. http://www.myspace.com/strucktunes Third band up was Death Valley Driver, who are a 5 piece metal band from Charlottetown and were making their live debut. It was worth the wait for DVD as they blew the crowd away. I haven’t heard very many local metal bands that were this tight and had a good sound. They sound like they’ve been together for years. Don’t search them on MySpace as you’ll find that a much lamer band shares their band name. Intoxicado, (who are quite excellent) were scheduled to compete as well, however, they were unable to attend. I’m sure they would have given the other bands a run for their money. And the winner is…. Death Valley Driver! I wasn’t able to find any of their content on YouTube or MySpace, but keep your ears open for them as they’ll be playing a show at Baba’s in the near future. I’m sure this won’t be the last you’ll hear from them. Congrats to them, they earned it.
