Me With John Oates

John Oates and I doing what we love.

Saturn Returns

About three years ago, I had three life changing events happen within a few weeks of each other. My husband proposed to me on a flight to Paris. It was on that flight that I began to write the lyrics to "Let The Rain". My manger told me that John Oates wanted to have a writing session with me and I would be doing this at his home in Aspen. I was ecstatic. I began to prep by spending a week at home alone in LA gathering my ideas and thinking of what specifically I wanted to work on. While driving up to the house that week I literally stopped the car grabbed my recorder and began to sing the chorus of what would be my song "Saturn Returns". My husband, comedian, Ron White was touring the East coast and we agreed that he was going to stay at our place in Atlanta between shows so that he could give me my creative space. In the middle of the night, he surprised me by taking the late night flight into L.A. there I saw him standing in my bedroom with a big smile. After some fooling around, he touched me in a very accidental way and said "What the hell is that?" We both discovered a lump in my left breast. Within three days I had a biopsy and a bleak breast cancer diagnosis with more tests and biopsies needed the following week. I have always considered myself a musician first before I am anything else. So when the doctors told me they wanted to see me the following week, I said "Oh no, I'm writing songs with John Oates next week. I'll be back after that!" In Aspen, John was lovely, gracious and a super cool, chilled out guy. Like magical chemistry, on our first day we had written "Let The Rain". By our second day of writing, I finally told him about my news but I wanted our sessions to be a Cancer-Free Zone. He loved my song ideas and insisted that Saturn Returns must be my story. That night I wrote the lyrics and the melody and the next day we crafted the song. Now, three years later, my song writing has become more enriched, John Oates is a dear friend and I am a Cancer-Free-Zone. "Between Us"

To me ‘Between Us’ emits a subtle country sound and you may even hear a bit of a southern twang from my voice. A soft accompaniment of a fiddle dives halfway to add another layer of country and depth to the track as a whole. Even though the lyrics may give off a sense of vulnerability, the song is very sedative and tranquil, and puts me at peace.
