URBAN BLIGHT

Day 7 in the Poetic Asides 2016 April PAD challenge: complete the phrase URBAN (BLANK)

URBAN BLIGHT (c) 2016 G. Smith (BMI) >========

THE FIRST AND LAST TIMES

The 5/6 prompt at writersdigest.com/editor-blogs/poetic-asides is write an ekphrastic poem.

An ekphrastic poem is a poem inspired by another work of art.

The blog-site had several pieces from which to choose...

So... After Michelangelo’s First Painting (which you can find on the aforementioned blog site).

THE FIRST AND LAST TIMES G. Smith (BMI) ***** The first time I thought, Something was different, I didn’t say a thing, For fear it was true. I hoped I was wrong, Or maybe just petty, I couldn’t stand the thought, Of ever losing you.

But it feels like demons, Deep in my chest, They give me no quarter, They give me no rest; I wrestle and fight With all of my might, But can’t say a word As you turn out the light.

The first time I knew, Something was different; You wouldn’t look me, Straight in the eye. What could I do, Except softly ask you, If it was true, And if so, then why?

And it feels just like demons, Deep in my chest, They give me no quarter, They give me no rest; I wrestle and I fight With all of my might, But can’t say a word As you turn out the light.

The last time I saw you, So much was different, You were closing the door, You were going away. Had I waited to long, To make everything right? Was there nothing I could do? Nothing I could say?

Now it feels like demons, Deep inside my chest, They give me no quarter, They give me no rest; I wrestle and I fight With all of my might, But can’t say a word As you turn out the light.

(YOU SAY YOU'VE) NEVER DONE THIS BEFORE

The first Tuesday prompt of the challenge a 2-fer, is to write an EXPERIENCED &/or INEXPERIENCED piece.

Here's song that covers both sides of the equation...

(YOU SAY YOU’VE) NEVER DONE THIS BEFORE G. Smith (BMI) ———————– You say you’ve never done this before, Well I have, a time or two. It was always for fun, but never with one, Who means as much as you do. This may not be my first time, But each time feels brand new; You say you’ve never done this before, Well I have, a time or two.

You say your mama warned you, There would be guys like me; That we only have one thing in mind, But, Baby, can’t you see? I only care about you and your feelings, What other reasons could be? You say your mamma warned you, There would be guys like me.

You say you’ve never done this before, Well, something says that’s not true; I can’t be the first one that you’ve sent away, Feeling brokenhearted and blue. I never saw it coming, Especially from someone like you; You say you’ve never done this before, Well, something says that’s not true.

You say you’ve never done this before; But something says that’s not true.

DO YOU KNOW HOW FAR I'D TRAVEL?

The Poetic Asides April Poem-A-Day challenge for today, 4/4, is write about distance.

Here's my "bluegrass" response.

DO YOU KNOW HOW FAR I’D TRAVEL G. Smith (BMI) ======•====== Do you know, how far I’d travel? Do you know, how far I’d go? Do you know, how far I’d travel? Do you know, Dear, do you know?

I would swim, across the ocean, I would sail, across the sea; I would swim, across the ocean, Just to see, you smile at me.

I would walk, across the desert, I would trek, the burning sands; I would walk, across the desert, Just to hold, one of your hands.

Do you know, how far I’d travel? Do you know, how far I’d go? Do you know, how far I’d travel? Do you know, Dear, do you know?

I would climb, the highest mountain, I would scale, the tallest peak; I would climb, the highest mountain, Just to hear, the words you speak.

There is no distance, that’s too great, Dear, There is no journey, that’s too long; There is no challenge, I won’t take, Dear, To prove, my love is strong.

Do you know, how far I’d travel? Do you know, how far I’d go? Do you know, how far I’d travel? Do you know, Dear, do you know?

But since you live, the next town over, I’ll ride a horse, or take the train; And I’ll be there, Dear, just to see you, Unless, of course it rains.

Do you know, how far I’d travel? Do you know, Dear, do you know?

THREE LITTLE WORDS

Today's Poem-A-Day prompt at writersdigest.com/editor-blogs/poetic-asides is complete the phrase "Three (BLANK)", Use it for the title, -and the - Write...

...and here's what I wrote, for what it's worth...

THREE LITTLE WORDS (c) 2016 G. Smith (BMI) ----------///---------- It started with a first look, The day you caught my eye, Would a second glance Bring half a chance for You and I? You and I?

There was something in the way you smiled, That told me I should try, So I put aside doubt, Asked you what about You and I, you and I.

Three little words, you and I, you and I; Three little words, you and I They take me back, They make me cry, Those three little words, you and I.

Well, it couldn't’ve been more perfect, It couldn't’ve been more true; Those wonderful days, And your wonderful ways; I love you, I love you.

Never felt so good before, And I thought you felt it, too; The best time of my life, Thought you’d be my wife; I love you, I love you.

Three little words, I love you, I love you; Three little words, I love you. They take me back, Do you cry, too? Those three little words, I love you.

It's not that you can't; It's not that you won't; It's not that you wouldn't; It's just that you don't.

It ended with a goodbye glance, The cold wind in your hair, You drove away, How could you say, I don't care, I don't care?

I hoped you'd give us one more chance, Instead my heart lay bare. Couldn't believe my ears, Couldn't hold back the years; You don't care, you don't care, You don't care, you don't care.

Three little words, I don't care, I don't care; Three little words, I don't care; They take me back, It's just not fair; Those three little words, I don't care.

BACK AND FORTH

The PAD prompt from Poetic Asides was a he said/she said thing...

Th first line came from something I overheard at my oldest son's wedding last month~ which proves you never know where an idea may come from...

BACK AND FORTH (c) 2016 G. Smith (BMI) ------------------- “You can't even dance,” she said, “Rub your belly and pat your head, “You couldn't even fall out of bed, “You and your two left feet.”

“Just give me a chance,” he said, Trying to keep his face from turning red, “Give me some gum and I'll make a bet, “I can chew and walk down the street.”

She said, “You can't even drive a nail, “You hit your finger every time without fail, “Ain't that just like a male, “Think you can do it all.” He said, “You know that that's not true, “There's things I admit that I can't do,“ “But I try my best, just for you, “That’s my biggest downfall.”

And so it goes, they go back and forth, Like an old swing out on the front porch, What’s now a candle used to be a torch, But the flame still burns.

“Ask for directions,” she says in the car, “Oh, you know,” he says, “it's not too far,” “You don't always know where we are; “When will you ever learn?”

“You used to say that you loved me so, “But lately I'm not even sure I know, “I guess it's there, but it doesn't show,” They both said to themselves.

APRIL'S FOOL

Well, it's National Poetry Month, and I'm following a blog (writersdigest.com/editor-blogs/poetic-asides), that challenges to write a Poem A Day (PAD).

Today's prompt was to write a foolish poem... So, fool that I am, I wrote a song...

Your thoughts, comments, or requests to work together ate always welcome.

Yours,

g °°°°°°°°°°°°°°°° APRIL'S FOOL (c) 2016 G. Smith (BMI) •••••|•••••|•••••|••••• It happens each spring, I do the same old dumb thing, I find myself thinking of her; Seems I ought to know better, But with the warmer weather, The same old feelings, Always start to stir.

When the dogwoods bloom, I look around my empty room, Recalling the day she walked out of my life; How could it be true? What was I supposed do, When she told me she was tired Of being my wife?

Yes, I’m still April's fool; Some folks say that she’s cruel, But I guess they don't see what I see; If I wait long enough, Be a man and stand tough, I know that she'll come back to me.

It’s not the first time she’s gone, But she’s never stayed long, Now my eyes are red and it's not the pollen, She's always come home before, To find me pacing the floor, I guess it's clear just how hard I have fallen.

So I'll stay April's fool, Though you might think she's cruel, I guess you don't see the things that I see; If I wait long enough, Be a man and stand tough, I know that she'll come back to me; There's never been anyone else, Out there for me

BLESSED BEYOND MEASURE

Started this a couple of weeks ago whilest the subject of the first verse was having its oil changed.

Your thoughts and/comments are, as always, welcome (some things are NEVER changed).

g

-----------•---------- BLESSED BEYOND MEASURE (c) 2016 G. Smith (BMI) ```°```°```°```°```°``` I ride an old rustbucket truck around town, It runs pretty good when it ain't broken down. I climb in it here, and it gets me to there, And I'll drive it until the wheels go square. I'll drive it until the wheels go square.

I live in a ramshackle house in the woods. The paint may be peeling, but the roof is still good. It's back in a corner on Grandaddy's land, And it stands 'cause the termites are all holding hands. It stands 'cause the termites are all holding hands.

I've got what I need and I need what I've got; I don't want for much 'cause I don't want lot. I'm blessed beyond measure, my cup overflows, With the mercy and treasures the Good Lord bestows; With the grace and the treasures the Good Lord bestows.

I work twice as hard for half of the pay; From sun up till after dark-thirty each day. My bride is beside me when I turn out the light; And I never have trouble sleeping at night, No we never have trouble sleeping at night.

We've got what we need and we need what we've got; We don't want for much 'cause we don't want lot. We're blessed beyond measure, our cup overflows, With the mercy and treasures the Good Lord bestows; With the grace and the treasures the Good Lord bestows.

RIGHT WHERE YOU LEFT ME

The second verse tells you where I drafted this... Doesn't say how long it too, though...

As always, your thoughts, comments, and kind criticism (s) are welcome.

RIGHT WHERE YOU LEFT ME G. Smith (BMI) ~~~~~~~~•~~~~~~~~ Back in high school you were the queen, The prettiest girl that I'd ever seen. But us together? How could that be? But there I was, right where you left me. There I was, right where you left me.

Down at Belk you were trying on clothes, Your least favorite thing, the good Lord knows. I sat on a stool, a pad on my knee, Writing this song, right where you left me, Writing this song, right where you left me.

Right where you left me, Doing what I do, Right where you left me, Waiting for you, Right where you left me, Waiting for you.

If you leave for Austin without looking back, Your days may be bright, but my nights will go black. If you change your mind, you know what you'll see? Me on the front porch, right where you left me. I'll be on the front porch, right where you left me.

***** Keep 'em tight, and keep 'em in tune...

END IT~!

There are 27M people trapped in slavery around the world today... more than at any other time in history...

There are an estimated 60,100 people trapped in slavery in the United States right now.

Slavery has many forms and names: BONDED LABOR... FORCED LABOR... HUMAN TRAFFICKING... ...but it’s still slavery.

And it’s still wrong.

It is illegal in every single country in the world.

Yet it still exists. Slavery is the 2nd largest global organized crime, generating $150.2 BILLION PER YEAR

That's more than the combined revenues of Amazon, Google, and E-bay every year.

Nearly 1 in 5 victims of slavery is a child. The average age a teen enters the sex trade in the US is 12 - 14 years old.

55% of forced labor victims are women and girls.

SLAVERY IS REAL.

BUT TOGETHER WE CAN END IT.
