It all starts with just a little fib: "Oh, we can't go to your party, sorry. Nothing serious, just a sore throat and a little fever, but we really don't want to spread any germs." Now we got the evening to ourselves, and we didn't have to hurt anyones feelings by saying no. But then the fib grows. Our friends send over some chicken soup. We get a phone call asking if we're feeling better. Someone who went to the party runs into us the next week and expresses sympathy over our illness, It would have been easier to go to the party or to simply say that we prefered to stay home.

I love my younger years, but I also love how experience has informed my judgement and made me a wiser person.

What adult over 30 doesn't like to be thought of as youthful? It flatters us when others assume that were younger than we are. Being young at heart, though, shouldn't mean being young at mind. If our perspective on the world doesn't widen and deepen as we age, then we're quandering the most valuable asset life has to offer.

Friends give us thier friendship and all that goes with it: laughter, support, loyalty, trust, companionship, sympathy, new interests. When we give friendship, we get friendship in return. It is truly a gift we give ourselves. Unfortunately, it's easy to become so busy self-absorbed, or cautious that we shut ourselves off to the possibility of making new friends. Sometimes we even shut oursleves off to friends we already have. Opening ourselves to friendship takes time and commitment, and it invloves some risk-but, oh, the possibilities!!!
