ALEX*CUBA HITS #1 ON ITUNES U.S. LATIN THEN TOURS THE EAST
RE-RELEASES ALBUM IN CANADA JUNE 3RD
Northern B.C.-based singer-songwriter Alex*Cuba (Alexis Puentes) has had a dazzling couple of weeks south of the border. On April 29TH, the title track from his Juno Award-winning sophomore release “Agua del Pozo” (on his own label Caracol Records) became the iTunes U.S. Latin and World Single of the Week. Within 24 hours, the album reached #1 on the Tropical Latin Albums Chart, where it stayed for the rest of the week. That weekend, the album also peaked at #7 on the overall iTunes U.S. Latin Albums chart.
This independent digital feat (Cuba does not yet have a licensing deal in the U.S.) was followed by his live debut at Ohio State University (May 5) and Boston (May 7) and a sell-out concert last Friday night at New York City’s famed Joe’s Pub. U.S. fans and media were entranced by Alex*Cuba’s modern, soulful and original take on Latin music, covering him in The Boston Globe, The New York Daily News, The New York Post, Edge Magazine, NYC TV and others. He goes back to the big apple July 10, having been selected to play at the Latin Alternative Music Conference’s showcase at the Bowery Ballroom. Next up is his live debut in Philadelphia at that city’s book festival this Saturday, May 17.
Back home, Cuba has inked a new distribution deal with EMI Music Canada and will be releasing a newly re-packaged “Agua del Pozo” on Tuesday, June 3rd, ahead of a bevy of Canadian tour dates this summer.
For a guy who moved from small-town Cuba to small-town Canada, Alex*Cuba thinks big. Playing guitar since he was 4 years old, he has won numerous awards including two consecutive Juno Awards and he has toured the UK, Japan and America. With a heart as big as his retro 'fro, Cuba takes it in stride and focuses on what he does best: crafting songs that cut through linguistic barriers like a machete through sugarcane.
It will be interesting to see what the future holds for this DIY troubadour who grows his own vegetables in his backyard in Smithers, B.C.

The Story
Alex*Cuba was hails from Artemisa, Cuba and now resides in Smithers, B.C. Musically, he lives everywhere in between. Playing since he was 4 years old when his father Valentin Puentes handed him a little guitar, the globetrotting Cuba has toured the U.S., Japan and the U.K. Not your traditional Cuban musician, Alex*Cuba punches through the sometimes restrictive "World Music" moniker by sporting a retro-fro, vintage tee-shirts and bell bottoms while dropping sugar cane-sweet melodies, pop/soul hooks and rock chords. He plays a vintage Gibson electric guitar. There's no cowbell here, folks. Since January 2008 Alex has had a successful iTunes Single of the Week, has won an "indie" award for favourite World Music artist and has won his second Juno Award for World Music Album of The Year for "Agua del Pozo".
