The ongoing, insurgent, country project, "Butch Cavendish" was initially started in the spring of 2009 by David Carbrey.
Recently relocated from LA to Colorado and glad to be away from the shiny shirts and electronic beats of the big city, David had an idea to mix the classic, outlaw, country music that he grew up listening to in his home-town of Poteau, Oklahoma with the more modern, "insurgent" stuff he had listened to in college.
Randy Poe (Formerly of a local band called, "Narrow Gauge") played stand-up bass in this early version and Dave Deason (Formerly of Heart, among others such as Tanya Tucker) played drums and washboard, while Ed Johnson (A local guitar legend from various groups) handled the guitar-work. As well as some tasty stuff from Jay McClinton (Jay played with Michael Martin Murphy for over a decade) on guitar.
"Butch Cavendish" (Named for the Lone Ranger's nemesis.) gigged regularly, over the course of a year, throughout the Colorado Springs area, and had a blast. Unfortunately, they were forced to dis-band in the Summer of 2010 when David relocated back to Oklahoma.
Vowing to keep "Butch" kicking, David immediately began seeking the right players, in the OKC area.
The line-up was completed as a 5-pc. with David singing and playing rhythm, Kris Olson on Pedal-steel, Jim Fish (Of the Byron Berline Band) on lead-guitars & back-up vox, Scott Buxton (Formerly of the Red Dirt Rangers) on drums, and Tim Lasyone (A truly wicked bluegrass player) on the upright bass, mandolin and back-up vox.
After a about a year in OKC, David moved to Dallas and once again revived "Butch". Although the stay in Dallas was short, David found some excellent players: Robert Arthur, (R.I.P.) an amazing pedal-steel player and his '69 tele joined-up first and Michael Markley added his 100-yr-old stand-up bass to the line-up, shortly thereafter. Wayman McAllister, an old friend and accomplished drummer from a myriad of ambitious projects came aboard and Chris Holt, (Founding member of multiple, Dallas projects and winner of many honors in the Dallas area. Including the Observer's Guitarist and Musician of the year awards and having recorded with The Eagles' Don Henley.) another college buddy and incredible guitarist added his style to the mix and "Butch" would ride again, only to be reformed Again, about a year later when David moved back to OKC.
For this most recent lineup, Wayman McAllister continued on as the drummer and Todd Lynch (Just off the road with Johnny Lee's, "Urban Cowboy Band) joined the band. Tim Lasyone (Upright bass) and Kris Olson (Pedal Steel) were added back to the lineup and the lineup of Butch Cavendish project has finally seemed to be complete.
"Butch" has been a regular at Grandad's Bar in OKC where the crowd appreciates the less mainstream covers as well as the original material which sounds a lot more like actual, classic, country music, as opposed to the "Red Dirt" which has recently been absconded by modern, top-40 wannabees who are really playing 90's pop-rock.
So, with a revolving line-up, much like Steely Dan, "Butch Cavendish" remains true to it's origins with classic country instrumentation and an aggressive attitude that frankly, makes Top-40 country artists look like a bunch of tenderfoot, pop-stars!
David is currently writing more originals and has dates booked in the Spring of 2015 to take Butch into the studio. GIDDYUP!
