Album release party for Harold Wong's "Death by Snu Snu"
Improv and Improvised Music!
CD RELEASE PARTY for OIL IN THE ALLEY's new album "SACRED SNAIL." Sacred Snail was recorded live in the KTUH studios and professionally engineered by Lock Lynch, with breathtaking album art by Michy Moody (see attached photo). The recording features 9 songs with improvised lyrics set to all-original music, along with improvised banter as the band discusses their storied career. OIL IN THE ALLEY is a unique music act which features original rock music along with polished improvisational humor. The show’s premise is this: the band was a hugely famous megasuperstar arena rock act 20+ years ago and has now hit the road on a Reunion Tour comeback attempt. In performance, the members of the band are always in character; there is no “improviser host” persona asking for suggestions. Instead, the rockers extract ideas for song titles by talking with their megafans in the audience and using ideas from clothing, turns of phrase, and anything else to inspire a song. They then extemporaneously create completely new lyrics to an original rock song as if it were a “Classic” Oil in the Alley hit from their heyday. The act takes advantage of the humor of the rockstar life and mythos but does not parody any particular musicians or spoof identifiable songs. OIL IN THE ALLEY is Sean T.C. O'Malley (Guitar and Lead Vocals), R. Kevin Garcia Doyle (Lead Vocals), Bri X (Bass and cool), and Dan Cutter (Drums and Backing Vocals). https://www.facebook.com/OILINTHEALLEY BUSEKRUS is a polished, tuneful, alt/pop/rock band with songwriting soul and melodic hooks. "With Oil in the Alley, one thing you can always count on is never running out of creative, imaginative, and tongue-in-cheek moments of groundbreaking improvisation . . . 'The Neverending Line' follows a discussion about the band having had a whole album full of songs written about other bands, and features a beautiful guitar riff that I want to say sounds like a mix between Fleetwood Mac and Blue Oyster Cult. These guys are so good at what they do, it feels like there’s some kind of Easter egg hidden around every verse. The music itself runs the gamut from classic rock, to REM-inspired jangle rock, power pop, new wave, and post punk . . . Another thing to keep in mind about Oil In the Alley is how amazingly dry their humor can be. I’ve found myself from time to time wondering how much, if any, truth is in any of their numerous backstories. With such a quick, and straight-faced delivery, it’s easy to forget that the whole thing is a game sometimes."
