Mark Holland is a music artist, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Chapel Hill, NC. Mark began his music career in 1993 as drummer for the rock and roll band Jennyanykind, who rose to major label Elektra Record’s roster in 1995 and released the cult classic album Revelater in 1996. Over the years, Mark developed his own act, initially called Jule Brown, displaying a knack for writing and performing. Influenced by Charley Patton, Howlin’ Wolf, John Lee Hooker and more, that act continues today with his jazz and blues influenced cross-harp garnering him international recognition and a Seydel endorsement as a harmonica player. His first album, released on NYC based No. 6 Records, The Legendary Magic of Jule Brown, created a stir in 1995 when it gained national attention from a review by Jon Parales in The NY Times. He followed that with another No. 6 release entitled Occurrence at Jule Brown Bridge. Ten years passed working and raising a family before his 2006 and 2007 releases for NYC based Enabler Records (Smoke and Mirrors and Soldier in the 9th respectively), but the records show the maturity in vocal performance and songwriting that would continue for his 2008 release for Dualtone, Surreal Folk Blues. Mark continues to perform and record today for the Euramerican Soul label based in Chapel Hill, as well as write and produce songs with his brother Michael for networks like HBO and AppleTV, and for the production studio Rough House. He appeared in and produced music for Rough House’s show “The Righteous Gemstones” on HBO in 2019, and also appeared in and produced music for AppleTV’s “Dickinson” in 2021. With his Knopfler-like voice and Dylanesque delivery, Mark has been described as a “savant" by Billboard music critic Chris Morris, as having “spectral songs” by music editor John Pareles in the NY Times and as having music "so sinister it would scare Robert Johnson" by Rick Cornell in Durham, NC's Independent Weekly.A three-disc retrospective vinyl record is in the works and is due to be released by Rough House in 2023.
