Memphis Deep is a three piece band from Memphis, TN that plays original music and original arrangements of covers ranging from blues to roots rock and soul. The trio features Robert M. Kelsey on guitar and vocals, Leroy Clay on drums, and David Dunn on bass.
Kelsey and Clay were formerly part of the rhythm section for the Brian Hawkins Blues Party, playing weekly on Beale Street and at other mid-South venues and events from 2015 to 2017, with Dunn joining them for the last six months of their run. Kelsey and Dunn also played together as members of the house band for the fabled Wild Bill’s Blues Club from 2016 to 2017.
Kelsey’s guitar playing is lyrical and dynamic, evoking elements of B.B. King, Freddie King, Otis Rush, Roy Buchanan, Eric Clapton, David Gilmour, and Jimi Hendrix, among others. Clay, a former U.S. Air Force drummer, is a propulsive and swinging force of nature, and Dunn’s bass playing lays the kind of soulful, rock-solid foundation that you would expect from a member of a legendary Memphis bass playing family. Together this trio delivers a unique and powerful blend of blues-infused music full of improvisational energy and synergy. And you never know who might make a special guest appearance.
