The Kennedys with special guest B. D. Love: A Tale of Two Cities A special Kennedys show highlighting new songs that paint lyrical pictures of two great cities; New York and Los Angeles. Pete's upcoming CD "Heart of Gotham" is an original song cycle, with each song a vignette based on experiences he's had in and around the East Village. "Villanelle", Maura's recent collaboration with Los Angeles poet B. D. Love, is a wide-ranging lyrical tapestry that draws the listener, at certain moments, into a sharpened focus on aspects of life in the natural ecosystem of Southern California. The balancing act of these songs from the two great creative cities in America, will make for a fascinating evening of writers presenting work that was sparked by a combination of imagination and environment...add in Maura's great singing, Pete's stellar guitar work, and a rare appearance by B. D. Love reading some of the poems that inspired "Villanelle", and you have a great show. Aug 16, 7pm Coffee Gallery Backstage 2029 Lake Street Altadena, CA Tickets: $20 For reservations: (626) 798-6236 http://www.coffeegallery.com/

CD Release 3:00pm Matinee Show! Maura Kennedy with great courage, leaves the safety of New York City to celebrate, bravely, her new CD "Villanelle: The Songs of Maura Kennedy and B.D. Love." 3,000 miles and a lot of effort to entertain you. A CD Release show! Songwriters will be advised to be at The Coffee Gallery Backstage to hear the insights and advice of master songwriter B.D. Love." It will be like an expensive song writing seminar but you will be paying only the $10 admission. $10? Why do they do that? It should be $50. Such a bargain. MAURA KENNEDY is a master performer and an expert in her craft. The regular audience at The Coffee Gallery Backstage is in for a matinee treat. Maura Kennedy celebrates the release of her new album, "Villanelle: The Songs of Maura Kennedy and B.D. Love." Maura, a veteran East Coast singer songwriter known for her angelic voice and straight-to-the heart melodies, (and one-half of the folk/americana duo The Kennedys,) teams up with widely published California poet B.D. Love to create “Villanelle...” a highly anticipated and unique collection of songs. The textures on “Villanelle...” range from rocking and rootsy to gossamer and lacy, but the intertwining threads of Maura’s voice and melodies with B.D.’s lyrics, weave a fabric that unfolds on its own cutting edge. https://youtu.be/Ivopms8DvoM This will be a special CD release concert, with Maura performing these songs acoustically, and lyricist, B.D. Love introducing the songs and providing some insight into how the songs were written. This will be a unique show for the pair, and a rare one, as they live on separate coasts. Expect some surprises! 3:00pm matinee show. Tickets only $10. Family-friendly. http://www.maurakennedy.com/tourdates.html http://www.coffeegallery.com/showsat.htm

The Kennedys celebrate the second of their three CD releases marking their 20 years together: Maura's solo album, "Villanelle: The Songs Of Maura Kennedy And B.D. Love" (Varese Sarabande records.) This concert is the second in a residency at Rockwood celebrating The Kennedys' three new releases. In April, the duo presented all new songs from their 20th anniversary duo CD, "West." This time around, Pete and Maura Kennedy will feature songs from Maura's solo album, all written by Maura and widely published California poet, B.D. Love. Maura says this about the collaboration, "B.D.'s lyrics are much different than anything I would naturally write. Where I would write in straight four line stanzas, verse-chorus-verse-chorus-middle eight-chorus, for example, B.D. will write a Villanelle or a Sonnet, or some brand new form with odd-length sections and stand-alone lines, or with a litany at the end. He's so creative, and as a result of his approach, I'm forced to write melodies in these new and different (to me) styles. I find I'm writing melodies I never would have imagined before. The real trick is to fit my music to these challenging forms without having them sound forced. It's made me a much better, more interesting songwriter as a result." Video: https://youtu.be/Ivopms8DvoM 7:00 doors, 7:30 show. $15 Because it's the beginning of the Memorial Day Weekend, we'll give everyone in attendance a free copy of Maura's first album, "Parade Of Echoes" with purchase of her new "Villanelle..."
