Ljova & the Kontraband with the North Country Chamber Players If genre-defying music was a genre, Ljova and the Kontraband would probably defy that too. For if bringing together influences from classical, klezmer, tango, jazz and Gypsy music has been done before, nobody does it quite like this. Moscow-born, New York-based film composer, arranger and violist Lev 'Ljova' Zhurbin writes and plays music that evokes forgotten memories of things you think you've heard before but haven't, while dreaming of Bartok and Piazzolla trundling through an early-morning Hungarian mist in a three-legged race to the village dance at the end of time. High-quality musicianship this entertaining is a joy to experience and when singer Inna Barmash emotes the full weight of a klezmer ballad with her silkily crystalline voice all available heart-strings will be tugged. Here today, going somewhere else tomorrow. Catch them while you can.North Country Chamber Players is a group of world-class musicians from major orchestras and musical institutions across the U.S. Every year since 1978 they have delighted White Mountain audiences with the gift of outstanding performances, innovative collaborations, and creative community and educational outreach. This concert is the center piece of a weekend of activities presented by the North Country Chamber Players, The Bethlehem Hebrew Congregation and The Colonial Theatre. For more information about this and other White Mountain cultural events visit: www.whitemountainsmusicfestival.com and www.bethlehemsynagogue.org.

“Ljova and the Kontraband play genre-defying music beautifully and soulfully. Organically bringing together influences ranging from classical and new music, klezmer, tango, jazz, Gypsy music and more, their music is smartly original, steeped in tradition while moving those traditions forward.”
