    Marrickville, NSW, AU | 2:30pm

Songwriter, traveller, and raconteur, Fred Smith will be telling stories from his new memoir The Dust of Uruzgan, and playing songs from the acclaimed album of the same name. Described as “a triumph of poetic journalism” and “finely observed snapshots of a harsh, sad and funny reality”, he weaves song and story to offer what 15 years of news reports failed to convey: an understanding of what was going on over there in the dust of Uruzgan. Fred worked alongside Australian troops for two years. His job was to understand the complex web of tribal and patronage networks that made things tick in Uruzgan province. Now he has written his experiences into a remarkable book to be published by Allen and Unwin in time for Father’s Day 2016. Fred will be accompanied by Liz Frencham on double bass, Carl Pannuzzo on piano/percussion and projections of some stunning photos from Afghanistan.

Hi, Have you heard of Triple J Unearthed? Triple J is part of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and they are currently looking into better ways that the ABC can help artists like yourself, and creative people in general, to get their work out there. I'm from the University of Sydney and I'm conducting research on how exactly this can be done. If you don't mind, can you contribute by answering the questions? 1. In using ReverNation, what has been the biggest help to your artistic career, and how? 2. What do you like about ReverbNation? 3. Is there anything you would change about ReverbNation? 4. Are you familiar with Triple J Unearthed? If so, what do you like/dislike about it? 5. What do you think the music industry and platforms like ReverbNation and Triple J Unearthed will be like 10 years from now? Please reply to mtsi4133@uni.sydney.edu.au

"Frencham has a voice with all the appeal, emotional honesty and clarity of someone like Shawn Colvin or Mary Chapin Carpenter. Yes, really, she is that good."
