“Using razor blades for guitar picks and sneering like Freddie Krueger, Boise thrash-metal quintet Karin Comes Killing has appeared with its debut album just in time for Halloween. Any other moment, the premise of a band that has been coerced to spread the message of an ominous female serial killer — or else! — might seem silly, albeit creative. Days before trick-or-treating begins, it just feels fun. You definitely hear these veteran musicians enjoying themselves. Ghosts of their past influences haunt Karin Comes Killing’s blood-soaked trail, whether it’s the Black Sabbath plod of “Better Than Sex,” the manic, pencil-stabbing catharsis of the System of a Down-like “Demania” — or just the old-school sing it/shout it vocals, which stylistically resemble primitive Pantera, Anthrax or M.O.D. instead of modern metal growls. These poor boys — who polish off the disc with an inspired, 6-plus-minute jam exorcism called “The Pact” — are just the messengers, right?”
