“The band’s secret weapon is their mature use of dynamics: dynamics in the set list flow; the fusion of singer/songwriter introspection with amped-up rock; Some tracks, like “Withdrawn,” are pure acoustic; some are recorded with an energized live sound, a simmering electric guitar back in the mix; other tracks are methodical studio creations, such as the five-minute mini-marvel, “I Don’t Miss The Ocean,” with its layered vocals, pounding percussion and aching-to-scorching guitar range for an overall cinematic broadness...“For You” – the innocent love song smack dab in the middle of a serious stream. “Hey Boy, Hey Girl” is an homage of sorts to Cold Play, with compelling vocal and guitar performances contrasted by a soft and steady military drum, and the rawness of “The Laughter’s Gone” –the weeping guitar solo, the unrestrained vocals and jazz-infused chorus – takes them to another level of artistry.
