Endogenous represents the first collection of music created from a new technology entitled “StateSong”, where biometric data (Heart Rate, Blood Pressure, Body Temp, etc.) are converted into sounds and songs. Take a listen. We would greatly appreciate if you would view and support our GoFundMe campaign by going to www.gofundme.com/endogenous-music-from-biology
Historically; in 1987, seeking to understand a syndrome named “stress induced amenorrhea”, (where a woman’s cycle would stop as a result of psychological stress), Robert Joseph, a Stanford graduate and medical student, used a simulation software program to model the human reproductive and stress hormone systems. In the graphics of the simulation, Robert saw patterns that were, in essence, biological canons and fugues, the most complex forms of music as created by Bach. Robert summarized his epiphany in the statement “we’re made of music”, and hypothesized that perhaps Bach was able to write in these complex forms of music because he unique cognitive access to the patterns that control our body’s rhythms for wake, sleep, eating, breathing cycles, etc . . .
Robert realized that our biological information is of a musical nature, and that, we could possibly convert this data in a musical form. In 2006, with the advent of the smart watch and it’s ability to collect real time biometric data, Robert submitted a patent that defines how our biological information could be used to create music from our endogenous states, and then use these StateSongs to synchronize, (entrain) into our best states.
Founding a company, MediMuse, to push StateSong technology toward fruition, Robert scouted for coding talent, finding engineer Peter Slack, well known in music production circles for his cornerstone code work with waveDNA. In a series of prototype builds, StateSong becomes a reality. Initially integrated with a 5-biometric device, the Empatica E4; (which captures HeartRate, BloodPressure, BodyTemp, GSR and Movement), Robert and Peter succeeded in directly converting biometric data into soundscapes, in real time. You hear the results of this effort in this collection of songs offered as “Endogenous”.
As a core technology, we see StateSong being able to provide a PTSD suffer with a calmSong; or a ADHD child an attentiveSong, a long-distance runner a 2ndwindSong; a team of rowers synchronized with a teamSong, a group of dancers entranced in a groupSong . . . And what if we were able to help babies (and parents) sleep with a babySleepSong? Or, send soldiers into the field sonically inoculated against PTSD with a NoTraumaSong? The possibilities are wonderfully endless . . .
More immediately, we envision YOU being able to record and listen to your own endogenous StateSongs, made from YOUR biometric data, to help you synchronize into YOUR best states.
As for music for music’s sake, We see using StateSong technology help creatives build movie scores and soundscapes from human state data, to produce a more deeply evocative experience. Our team at MediMuse is looking forward to licensing StateSong as a “Core Technology”, with OpenSource APIs that will offer endless opportunities for its application. As StateSong is, at its core, about the magic and science of Music, we wanted to let YOU, as believers, in on what we’re doing from the first note!
We hope you will join us as we document our journey.
