Curious Fools / Press

“Back when I discovered this band, they played a side stage at Cornerstone '95. There was a swagger in Steven Murray's stage presence and vocals that definitely matched what was heard on their first disc. There was a slightly psychedelic feel to their modern rock sound before, but Read is more polished with an alternative radio friendly vibe throughout. Standout tracks include (You're) Dangerous, Love (Is Believing), Gold, and Pull, which has a 3/8 rhythm that is quite a jam in and of itself. The disc ends with a cover of the blues song "Murder" by Moby Grape. Vocally, Murray reminds me a little of Bono at times, but at the same time commanding. The disc clocks over an hour, and it's worth every minute. You will most likely find this in the used section or bargain bins somewhere. It deserved a better shelf life and distribution. It's too bad these guys aren't around anymore. 3 releases and you're out, I guess.”

"Alternative without the thrift store clothing, rock without the hair transformation, and pop without the affectations," Curious Fools combines authentic rock and pop elements to create a sound that's as refreshing as their simple, Christ-centered message. Memorable cuts include "Carrier," "Touch," "The Other Side," "Bomb," "Trying to Get There," and the title track.

“CCM's 500 Best Albums of All Time CURIOUS FOOLS (1995) The self-titled debut from stellar rockers Curious Fools has stayed apart of my regular playlist for some 15 years now. It remains one of the finer produced rock albums in CCM for the time and Troy Deaton is a monster guitarist that has never really received his due. The band would record three very solid projects all worthy of being mentioned. Lead by Stephen Murray’s Bonoesque vocals but in a much harder groove setting the entire band is polished and professional. The sound on the album is LARGE and the influences of real classic rock like Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and Bad Company are evident throughout. A real highlight for guitar work is the cut “You Kill Me” which is a feast of riffs as well as monster drum fills and thundering bass.Very solid release from a very solid band that should have lasted more than a few albums.”
