Born in Neosho, Missouri, music has always been a big part in Chris Freund’s life. Growing up in a musical family, Chris’ talent became obvious when he began playing the melody of the Oak Ridge Boys’ “Elvira” on the piano at age three.
While attending the Neosho Intermediate School as a child, Chris learned to play both trombone and tuba and performed his first song with his father in church at the age of eight. He credits his band instructor, Mr. James Kelso, as one of the most influential people in his life. “Mr. Kelso taught more than just how to play our instruments,” Chris recalls. “He taught us about life and respect and how we should live our lives with dignity. I don’t think he will ever truly know the impact he has made on my life.”
In addition to being a talented musician, Chris also has a passion for songwriting. He has had three songs recorded by two gospel groups; “Set Me Free” (The Halls), “Live a Little More Like Jesus” (The Signature Quartet) and “He’s Coming Back for Me” (The Halls & The Signature Quartet). Chris is currently finishing an original project, showcasing his Country and Americana style of writing. Songs are available now on iTunes and other digital media platforms.
Chris recognizes Phil Vassar and Josh Turner as two of his musical inspirations. “Josh Turner is a great singer with a low voice and awesome range and Phil Vassar is one of the last country stars who exclusively plays piano. The guy proves you don’t have to play guitar to be a star.”
Chris has played for some pretty impressive country music and gospel artists, but the highlight of his musical career was when he was the lead vocalist and piano player for a Branson, Missouri show. “I got to do something that was always a dream of mine,” Chris reflects. “That was a great time. Dennis Tinsman and the rest of the Missouri Hayride came along at a time when I needed them most. I will always cherish the time I was with them.”
