Chickenbone Slim is a rising solo blues artist living in San Diego, California. He released his third album on March 2, 2020, "Sleeper" to strong reviews for his clever lyrics, unique subjects and his band's strong musicianship. Chickenbone has been playing blues out of California for over 30 years, first as a bassist with blues artists including the Mississippi Mudsharks and Tomcat Courtney, and later as Vocalist and Bassist for The Boogiemen and Jinx King. In order to express his written material and to improve his musicianship Chickenbone took up guitar as a full time instrument and formed his band "The Biscuits".
Chickenbone's newest album, "Sleeper" features 10 original songs, recorded at the famous Greaseland Studios in Campbell, CA with Christoffer "Kid" Andersen, as well as guest appearances by Laura Chavez (Candy Kane) and Joey Harris and Jerry Rainey (the Beat Farmers). Chickenbone Slim is backed on drums by Marty Dodson, bass by Andrew Crane, and on guitar Scot Smart. The band understands the historic necessity of each song, and can perform an authentic take on Chicago/Texas/Gulf Coast/Uptown Blues as necessary. It better have a 1950's to 1960's vibe, but Chickenbone's sound is not sock hop, its Johnny "Guitar" Watson in the Third Ward of Houston circa 1964 as in CB's song "Vampire Baby".
Reviews of the new album are strong-“A mix of Chicago and Gulf Coast blues with West Coast swing, Sleeper is all kinds of great.”-The Rock Doctor, John Kereiff
“…Chickenbone Slim is the actual definitive Americana ‘sound’ we all stretch to describe.”-Rocking Magpie, UK
“CHICKENBONE SLIM/Sleeper: A different kind of white boy with the blues, Slim continues to make his mark loud and clear. Fearless lyrics that don't hew the line and stomping swinging and slinging in the company of contemporary blues pros, Slim amps it up for a wild time. Ever on the rise and wide scope in his view, this is a smoking set of nu blues for contemporary audiences that are more concerned with the end result than history lessons. Smoking throughout.” -Midwest Record Review
Chickenbone's first CD “Gone” was nominated Best Blues Recording at the 2016 San Diego Music Awards, and his second CD “The Big Beat” release date September 15, 2017 reached #17 on the Living Blues Album Charts in October/November 2017. to strong reviews. “This is one of the finest things I have heard in this style in a while. It is very deeply rooted in blues traditions, immaculately played, and deals with everyday situations.”-Bill Wilson
Since he formed the band, Chickenbone has played over 1000 performances, including the San Diego Blues Fest, Adams Avenue Street Fair and Unplugged, and various festivals and tours in California and Arizona.
