"It's not jazz. Play some <bleep> jazz already!", or words to that effect, came the voice from towards the back of the comfortably full room that was warmly applauding a few songs into the Saturday night set. Heckler or welcome interjection, it was but a part of lively atmosphere to be found whenever Eddie Rayner and Brian Baker played the Waiheke Jazz Festival. Aside from the one show on an outdoor stage, the performances felt more like watching a couple of talented friends playing in your living room, with a similar level of interaction at times. It was only when the crowd reacted to the better known Split Enz songs that one was forced to draw breath and appreciate the combined talent and experience of these two musicians, not to mention how well they work together. Notwithstanding their largely remote collaboration on Brian's 2009 album, Hard Light, and some more recent songs yet to be heard but for these live performances, along with some rehearsals in the days preceeding the festi
