Dana Kirkendoll / Bio

Dana Kirkendoll has been around music her whole life. "There's pictures of me wrapped in a blanket sleeping in my dad's guitar case when I was two weeks old," says the 28 year old singer/songwriter. "My mom used to tell me all the time that I sang before I talked. Growing up to do music was never a question to me. I just knew it was what I was born for." When Dana was 11 years old, her dad gave her her first acoustic guitar. "I remember sitting in my room and trying to learn how to play every single song on Alanis Morissette's 'Jagged Little Pill'" After a few years of playing other people's songs, she decided to try writing her own material. "I wrote "Living This Lie" when I was 15. And I still play that song live," explains Dana, "Getting to release all my feelings and not getting in any kind of trouble for it was magical. My music is described a lot as "sad" or "emo" but I think the right word to use is "honest." I just write exactly how I feel at the moment. And I get emails from teenage girls all around the country telling me they can relate to it. And to me, that's what the music is all about. I think if my songs could help someone place a finger on their emotions then my job is done."

Listening to Dana's songs is like going through pages of her diary. In them, you hear tales of depression, loss, and being an outcast. But you also hear a lot of hope in them. "Yes, my life has been hard. And yes, I have been through a lot of struggle and pain, but I wouldn't be the person I am today without that. When I was at the lowest points in my life, I used my music to bring me back up. I realized that writing songs and recording and playing live shows is what fueled my soul. And I hope that passion and desire comes through in everything I do musically."

When talking to Dana Kirkendoll, you'll learn really fast how important music is in her life. "I literally eat, sleep, and breathe music. If I'm not practicing one of my instruments then I'm either listening to music, reading about it, watching a live DVD, or at a show. I even make sure to wear a band t-shirt pretty much everyday. My friends used make fun of me because before the days of mp3 players I would carry at least 30 CD's with me everywhere I go. But music is my best friend. I laugh with it, cry with it, get angry with it, fall in love with it, and EXPRESS with it."
