Son of Ian / Press

“Salt Lake City band Son of Ian was nominated to play at the 2013 Grammys. After the voting was done, the band took third place out of eight different bands in the Mountain Region. The Grammys have an event called Gig of a Lifetime. Trenton McKean, head of Son of Ian, got an e-mail from the Grammys telling him someone submitted them into the event. Contestants submit a music video for a band and see if it makes the cut. If it does, then the band moves onto the regional voting period. All the voting is done online and eliminates everyone but the top eight of the region. No. 1 from each region moves on to the final voting. Someone submitted Son of Ian’s music video of their song “Bitter World.” ”

“The music of Son of Ian is something unusual. The songs aren’t those boring ones that are heard over and over again on some FM radio station. The lyrics are smooth and make the listeners feel like they don’t want to leave. The man singing the songs looks into the crowd with piercing eyes. His smile lets the crowd know what he says is coming from the heart. He has been doing this for a long time and is comfortable behind the microphone and guitar.”

Brance Brown - Park City Review

“For starters, I haven’t heard a CD that I have listened to multiple times over and over and over again or not even been able to get through the whole album because I keep playing the first few songs multiple times since way back when I listened to Pearl Jam Ten in August of 1991 for the first time. For all the PJ haters, they are my absolute favorite band and always will be. However, I have a new close second, Son of Ian which is headed by Trenton McKean who is THE real deal! I absolutely love the sound, vibe, and entire album. I have not heard such a marriage of the saxophone with a band that sounded so harmoniously perfect since Clarence Clemens AKA The Big Man and Springsteen were united.”

“Son of Ian rocked the house last night. Pat's guitar cut the air in little pieces so you could breath the music into your lungs. I left high. Evan hammered everyone's ear drums till they wanted to explode into rhythms of Ecstasy. karl's bass work drove musical throbs straight through everyone's chest and broke bones. Dave's sexy sax work melted brains into puddles of love and joy. And then there was Trenton Mckean, This guy writes and orchestrates with no equal. His gritty grinding voice pulls you in till the music is yours. You can feel the passion of the lyrics. He had us rocking to Somewhere Over the Rainbow. What the crap! He can make anything rock. He is music. Next time.... don't miss the show. It's the best in SL. Thanks!”

“1. Trenton is white 2. Trenton has orgasm eyes when he sings. Actually, both of us laughed at those things! He assured me that I wasn’t the first to point out the obvious. However, he is so passionate about his music and getting his message across that he truly gets into every song emotionally and belts out his guttural sound with all he has which sometimes it leads to him digging deep inside to get it all out which in turn rolls the eyes back and sets him into a world of his own.”
