The Band SPORTS / Press

"A couple of weeks ago I went to see the record release show for the band Sports (the Rochester, NY version); they played with The Dads, who we’ve talked about here a couple of times, but the buzz surrounding Sports is at a much more fevered pitch, and after seeing them again, it’s with good reason. I first saw Sports when they opened for Stars and Wild Nothing when that show came through in September, and the five-piece’s music draws easy comparisons to Elvis Costello & The Attractions. They mesh jumpy pre-punk with harmony and keyboards into an agile, sweaty set. The songs aren’t flowery or drawn out; the longest track on their self-titled debut clocks in at three-and-a-half minutes. Not that they need to be: the band writes great pop songs, and they allow them to speak on their own without dressing them up in extended jams."

"Sports – this version is from Rochester, New York, has a very uninformative website and a facebook page, and is the reason I bothered to write this post today. They sound, in large part (but not only) because of their vocalist, a lot like early Elvis Costello. But in their defense, have you heard early Elvis Costello? It’s great! He was great! More bands should sound like that. And so even though the other SPORTS may have the best song, this one has the best album (which, I might mention, is self-titled, just to make sure they wouldn’t be any easier to find via search engines. Sigh.) ...Their album is filled with great songs and you should buy it and love it, but here’s a highlight – the rousing album closer and second best song on the record. Sports: “Disappear”

“From the mind of Mike Turzanski, check out Rochester, New York band SPORTS' new video for their song "Lawyers Singing Sweetly". Complete with changing leaves, a kidnapping, men with capes and wooden train whistles, seriously, what's not to like? ”

“after what seemed like hours of googling endless variations of “sports” i finally had success in tracking down the rochester new york band sports whose recent self-titled album recently hit my stereo with pleasing pop results. it’s a 26 minute charmer from the five piece band that wears its elvis costello/stiff records influences heavily and (probably) proudly on their sleeves. dig in. ”

“It's a bit of a mystery as to why the organ ever took a backseat in rock 'n' roll. But so many fans simply limit their rock 'n' roll intake to the guitar's thrash and twang. And though the guitar is the figurative hammer of the gods, there's that certain push and drive - that distinct honk and swell - that the organ emits that a guitar simply can't produce. The organ's energy is unparalleled and irresistible. You hear it, you love it. At least, it feels like love. I first fell for Rochester-based quintet Sports when the band played the Record Archive for National Record Store Day in April. The pop energy, the fun, the references to things I dig made me like this act immediately. The organ, with its upbeat, percussive drive and wail, made me fall in love...”
