Friday 15th May 2015 @ 7.30pm ALTAN- www.altan.ie At St. Alban’s Church, Tilford Road, HINDHEAD, Surrey GU26 6RB Over the past four years, we have had some brilliant Traditional Irish/Celtic bands playing for us at Grayshott Folk Club but the appearance of Altan at St. Alban's Church takes us up to the highest level of musicianship and will be the realisation of a dream for me personally. Established in Donegal some 35 years ago, Altan have been in constant demand all over Europe, North America and Australasia ever since. Their fresh, uplifting interpretations of Traditional songs and tunes brings a timeless quality to their music and each live performance is a unique and breath-taking experience. They are arguably the best Traditional Irish Folk band currently playing anywhere in the World. "Altan have always believed that Irish traditional music is a modern music in every sense and its growing influence and popularity have proved them right". Taking their lead from revivalist Celtic bands such as Planxty, De Dannan and The Bothy Band, Altan picked up the baton and took their rootsy Folk from the hotbed of Traditional Irish music in Donegal to the outside world. The outside world enthusiastically embraced their music and Altan have never looked back. "Altan’s international status and success found a very practical recognition when they were signed in 1996 to Virgin Records, the first Irish band of their kind to be signed by a major label. The band gained gold and platinum albums in Ireland and toured larger venues, literally throughout the world, with tours in Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Europe as well as regular successful U.S. tours. In spite of a hectic touring and recording schedule, Altan continue fresh in their vision of bringing the beauty and joy of traditional music to audiences everywhere, and have always promised themselves to continue as long as it’s fun – fortunately for us, it still is." Altan will be coming to us on the back of a full 24 date tour of the U.S.A. and Canada and are made up of: Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh-Vocals/Fiddle Mark Kelly------------------Flute/Low Whistle/Backing Vocals Ciaran Curran-------------Bouzouki/Bouzouki Guitar Ciaran Tourish------------Fiddle/Whistle/Backing Vocals Daithi Sproule-------------Guitar /Backing Vocals Martin Tourish------------Accordion Each member of Altan is a virtuoso musician on their chosen instrument but it is their combination and variety of sounds that make Altan such an outstanding and durable presence on the World music stage. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts and if you have never seen a Traditional Irish Folk band playing at full tilt then why not start with the very best? Why not start with Altan?
