The Opposed

The Opposed hailed from Edmonton, Canada during an important period in the punk music scene (1999 - 2003). The band played many local all-ages hall shows and recorded 3 studio albums. Singer Aaron Clark was known for wild on-stage antics and the energy created made the circle pits crazy when The Opposed played. If you like hardcore punk and enjoy bands like the Sex Pistols, Dead Kennedys and early 80's punk, you will love The Opposed! The music is unique, fast, energetic and the lyrics deal with the many frustrations of being a nonconformist modern punk in a brainwashed society - trapped in a scene full of posers and idealist snobs. Every single song is catchy, anthemic, straight to the point and honest. The group formed in 1999, under the name Free Beer. It all began as a side project for high school friends Aaron, Jamie and Anthony. After recording the debut album "Free Beer" in Jamie's Basement recording studio in 2000, they decided to play some shows - recruiting Jamie's brother Nathan and Adam to fill up the sound. Free Beer ended up playing with a ton of local popular punk rock bands of the day, filling up the halls with fans. In the dawn of the millennium, Free Beer changed their name to The Opposed. Nathan quit and was replaced by Jeff. Adam quit and Dave joined the group on guitar. The band went through a couple more line changes adding Dylan and Joseph to the Opposed roster. In early 2001, The Opposed hit the studio once again and recorded their second album "Punk Is Dead". In order to sell more CD's, The Opposed asked scene legends Runic to join them in releasing a split CD. The Opposed played on and became a respected name in the Edmonton punk and metal scene. They played along-side memorable acts like the Wednesday Night Heroes, Runic, Generation Condemned, Death By Dawn, AWOL, Strength In Solitude, Wrekdefy and many more. In late 2002 they recorded "Bootlegs", a 7 song EP. The band played their last performance at the Shark Tank in 2003 before disbanding. Time passed and all of the members of The Opposed pursued other reputable musical projects. In 2014, guitarist Dave was hit by a car while he was walking through a cross-walk and he died. In 2023, Aaron and Jamie -who both live in different cities- talked about an Opposed reunion. Aaron decided to pick up the guitar and Jamie brushed the cobwebs off his drum sticks. They recruited Vancouverite Nathan to come back and play bass. The trio played in Edmonton at the Buckingham with Death By Dawn and the Dirtbags on Halloween weekend. Since then, The Opposed have committed themselves to play a couple more recent gigs that are all caught on camera. What's next for The Opposed? We will just have to wait and see!
