The Innocence of Old

It all started in Yellowknife, NT Canada. Wayne formed a band in 1965 called "Stained Glass Illusions" and went on to play in many other bands over the years. In 1981, Wayne Bertrand and Lawrence Carr started a group called "Shadowfax". That band stayed together for a couple of years, when the members went their separate ways. It was about a year later when all of the former members of "Shadowfax" met at a party, when it was decided that the band should reform. It was at this point that James Milligen joined the group, as the Sax & Keyboard player, now called "The Bad Boys". The band stayed together for about a year and again, all went their separate ways. Wayne and James then joined forces and the founding members of a band called "The Komatiks". After recording and releasing their first cassette in 1988, Wayne left the band. In 2011 Wayne and James reconnected and started jamming the music written by Wayne. In April 2012 Lawrence, the vocalist in "Shadowfax" and "The Bad Boys", reconnected with them and would meet in Wayne's home studio, located in Calgary, AB Canada. Lawrence wrote the Lyrics for the music written by Wayne and they formed the group "The Chili Project". In 2017, they changed the name of the group to, "The Innocence of Old". Currently Wayne and Lawrence are in the process of recording material for their 3rd CD. Have released a single called "Life is a Beautiful Song", that will be on the 3rd CD. **UPDATE** Wayne has moved from Calgary, AB, to Vancouver Island on April 25th, 2026. When the new studio is set up, The innocence of Old will continue to create and release our music to the world. Our music is not easy to categorize. When asked what is our style of music, I tell people that it's a throwback mixture of the 60’s, 70’s & 80’s, mixed up with some of today's music. I write the music as a feeling, whatever feels good and sounds good to my ear. Some people say that we have Pink Floyd feel, others say we have a Eagles touch in our music. Lawrence writes his lyrics from the heart and personal experiences in his life. He has a raspy growl to his voice which lends itself to a lot of heartfelt, soulful feeling in his singing. Many people feel that Lawrence has a Rod Stewart flavor to his voice. Since there is a fair amount of sax, the music leans towards a soulful jazzy feel. It seems that each person that hears our songs has their own take on our style of music - which is fine with us, as long as the person that listens to the songs has a good connection to it. We try to write songs that will be able to encapsulate an idea or an emotion and make it so, that when somebody listens to it, no matter what their age or what language they speak, they feel the music.
