Susan Garrett

Musician songwriter Susan Garrett has extensive experience performing pop, jazz, classical and children's music. As a music educator, she believes that music is a very powerful tool to assist children in learning about the world around them. Her recent musical "We Are Canadian" takes you on a journey through Canadian History. The lead vocal is sung by her brother, Sean Garrett, of the band "Garrett." The accompanying vocals on most of the songs are sung by over 80 nine and ten year old children from Spul'u'kwuks Elementary School in Richmond. Their unbridled enthusiasm is evident in the music! As a classroom teacher and music educator, Susan has always recognized the large void of music available for "preteens." They no longer wish to sing or listen to "baby" music, but would rather hear music about real people and events in their world. With that said, this music could easily be placed in the category of pop, and can be enjoyed by people of all ages. Susan has also created videos with the music in order to put real faces on the places and people they sing about. "Love Never Dies" pays tribute to our Canadian soldiers and the families that wait for their return. "Men of China" is dedicated to the 17,000 men who came from China from 1881-1884 to help build the Canadian National Railway, many losing their lives. "Sail Away" is about the almost 800 young women, known as the "filles du roi," who sailed from Paris to New France from 1663-1668 to help build our nation. As Canadians, we are usually quietly patriotic. The song "We Are Canadian," provides a loud, enthusiastic message about what it means to be Canadian! Enjoy!
