Who does she sound like? It depends. Sarah Motes Ashley is a prolific, classically trained singer / songwriter who loves to rock across genres. Pop is her native tongue, country is her favorite lyrical vehicle, instrumental and TV/film soundtrack music keeps her from going crazy, and jazz and musical theatre are the styles she can't quite quit. Sarah Ashley's songs and lyrics have won awards across the country and she's licensed songs to 6 cable TV shows (and counting). For her commercial songs she finds amazing local singers here in East Tennessee, but when she plays out she shows off the silky alto and dry wit she refined over years singing in Chicago's plentiful listening rooms and piano bars. These days she plays out with Blesser Heart, three other altos with harmony skills; it comes together in a couple sets of tasty vocals with a sense of humor. You will know her songs by the lyrics - funny, detailed, clever, surprisingly vulnerable - and the singable melodies and kicking grooves, as well as the occasional huge and lush stacks of vocals. In her live show she features the quirky, hilarious, touching and just plain random, switching between acoustic guitar and tenor ukulele, throwing in a little bit of piano and jumping genres like it's her job.
