Blake Sakamoto Presents the Minidoka Swing Band for an Evening of Music & Dancing at the Historic Adrianna Hill Grand Ballroom in downtown Portland! Oregon Nikkei Endowment is proud to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of its Japanese American Historical Plaza and Bill of Rights Memorial. A free and open to the public event will be held at the Plaza at the north end of the Portland’s Tom McCall Waterfront Park (NW Naito Parkway at Couch Street) on Sunday, August 2 Music by the Minidoka Swing Band from 3:15pm to 3:55 p.m. Special speakers from 4:00pm to 5:00pm including Ken Boddie, MC, Anne Naito-Campbell, Nick Fish, Bud Clark George Takei. Special music by Nola Sugai Bogle of the Minidoka Swing Band. Following the event will be a celebratory cruise on the Portland Spirit. Boarding will begin at 5:30 and a dinner cruise will take place from 6-8:30 pm. Tickets are $100 for general public, $85 for Friends of O.N.E., and $50.00 for 12 and under. George Takei will be the special guest for this evening out on the Willamette River. Music will be provided by Thomas Lauderdale of Pink Martini. Bruce, taking the picture in the above photo, was the best groupie and photographer and friend a band could have. He has supported and followed us to all our practices and events since 2007! We'll miss your Bruce. Our condolences to your family.

“Dear Friends, The Minidoka Swing Band Japan Concert Tour 2015 will be “Sharing US-Japanese Heritage & Culture through Music to Japan” November 6-16, 2015. We are asking for your help to finance this historical tour so the Minidoka Swing Band can share an important part of Japanese American history through educational narration, pictures and music of the era. All of the musicians in the band and their two managers are volunteers and receive no pay. They volunteer their time and talent to the Minidoka Swing Band to educate and preserve this important period of Japanese American history. It’s been 70 years since WWII ended and over 110,000 people of Japanese ancestry (62% of whom were American citizens) were released from their imprisonment. Many of these survivors are gone and there are ever decreasing numbers left to keep the history alive. The Minidoka Swing Band has three members who are survivors of the WWII incarceration and many band members had family members incarcerat”
