For nearly three decades, Cleveland-based composers Edward Douglas and Gavin Goszka—known collectively as Midnight Syndicate—have been creating dark symphonic "soundtracks to imaginary films" that transport listeners to worlds of their own creation. To many, they are horror music pioneers, crafting over sixteen studio albums with their signature blend of orchestral gothic compositions and movie-style sound effects. To others, they will always be the foundational "haunted house band" that elevated Halloween music, becoming an enduring staple in homes, theme parks, and haunted attractions worldwide. Still others revere them as the duo that created the first official soundtrack to the legendary Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game, trailblazing a new era of atmospheric music for tabletop gaming.
Reminiscent of sweeping, complex masterpieces by artists such as James Horner, Danny Elfman, Black Sabbath, and King Diamond, their critically acclaimed music has been featured in films, television shows, video games, and theatrical productions globally. Midnight Syndicate’s music has become integral to setting the atmosphere at top-rated haunted attractions, amusement parks, costume shops, gaming tables, and Halloween-themed cruises worldwide. In 2005, industry expert Leonard Pickel estimated that 75% to 90% of attractions in the commercial haunt industry utilized Midnight Syndicate music. In September 2009, an AOL/CBS Radio poll ranked three Midnight Syndicate discs in the "Top 10 Best Halloween Music CDs of All Time," trailing only Danny Elfman’s The Nightmare Before Christmas and John Carpenter’s Halloween. Cementing their genre legacy, the band was also featured in Rue Morgue Magazine’s "50 Essential Horror Albums – Discs that Created, Evolved, or Defined Genre Music Over the Decades."
Their music has been heard on Happy!, Barbara Walters specials, Monday Night Football, NBA on TNT, and sampled or featured by music artists including Insane Clown Posse, Three 6 Mafia, Twiztid, and The Misfits. In 2010, Midnight Syndicate expanded into filmmaking with The Dead Matter, an original horror feature directed, scored, and co-produced by Douglas alongside genre masters Robert Kurtzman (From Dusk Till Dawn, KNB EFX) and Gary Jones (Boogeyman 3). They followed this by scoring the SyFy Channel creature feature Axe Giant: The Wrath of Paul Bunyan (2013) and releasing Monsters of Legend, an orchestral tribute to classic Universal Horror that earned the band their second Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Award for Best Horror Album (their first awarded for 2011’s Carnival Arcane).
In 2014, Midnight Syndicate partnered with Cedar Point to debut Midnight Syndicate Live!, an acclaimed multimedia horror concert blending live instrumentation, theatre, and film that ran during HalloWeekends for nine successful seasons. Recent years have seen unprecedented growth: teaming with Universal Orlando for limited-edition Music of Halloween Horror Nights vinyl releases; celebrating the 25th anniversary with the launch of the dedicated Legions of the Night fan community; scoring the original soundtrack for Universal Destinations & Experiences' Universal Horror Unleashed in Las Vegas; and reaching #2 on Billboard's Classical Crossover Chart with The Brimstone Club. The duo continues to push atmospheric boundaries with their latest full-length folk-horror album, Plankett’s Grove.
