Lucky Mike
Lucky Mike is a Canadian singer and songwriter inspired by artists such as Gordon Lightfoot, Ian Tyson, Leonard Cohen, Neil Young, Fred Eaglesmith, Bob Dylan, Butch Hancock, John Prine and Gram Parsons. Besides original songs, Lucky Mike’s repertoire also includes many Blues, Popular, and Honky Tonk standards from the 1940s and 50s. Lucky Mike was born and raised on the north shore of Lake Superior in Northwestern Ontario. He began singing and playing guitar in the early 1970s, inspired by local musicians such as Ken Hamm, Rodney Brown and Hans Hansen. He has also lived in Winnipeg, Vancouver, Hamilton and, since 1984, Toronto. Throughout the decades Lucky Mike has played solo and in bands, sometimes for money, in bars, coffee houses, cafes, festivals, seniors’ residences, living rooms and kitchens. He hosted the Yellow Door Café coffee house at 6 St Joseph House from 2009–2012, participated in four Gram Parsons International North tribute shows in Toronto, and since 2013 has co-hosted, along with poet Linda Stitt, the monthly Words & Music Salon at the Tranzac Club. He is also a regular performer at the Celebrity Club at the Performing Arts Lodge in Toronto. In 2017 Lucky Mike released his first CD of original songs, Writing on the Wall. Recorded at Telejet Studios on Queen Street West, the album features contributions by Bob Cohen (electric guitars and 8 -string ukulele), Andrew Frost (pedal steel guitar), Allan Soberman (bass), Terry Kavanagh (drums), and Maurizio Valente (drums).
