Kevin Winchester

THE NEW RECORD IS FINISHED! TENTATIVE RELEASE DATE IS FEB 1ST, 2019 Kevin Winchester is a North Carolina native, where he now lives, writes, plays music, and teaches. Winchester’s story, “Waiting on Something to Happen,” won the 2013 Thomas Wolfe Fiction Award. His short story collection, Everybody’s Gotta Eat, published in 2009. Other short fiction has appeared in Gulf Coast Literary and Arts Journal, Barrel House, Story South, Dead Mule School of Literature, among others, and the anthology Everything But the Baby. His creative non-fiction has appeared in the Novello Press anthology Making Notes: Music in the Carolinas, Tin House Literary Magazine and a variety of other publications. In 2005, the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference awarded Kevin their Work Study Scholarship. His short story, “Everybody’s Gotta Eat,” was selected as a 2006 Notable Story by the Million Writers Award. Winchester holds a BA in English from Wingate University and an MFA in Creative Writing from Queens University. Winchester has been playing music for most of his life. He's played bass in a number of cover bands, played bass and wrote bluegrass songs with Bill Price and the Country Pardners in the 90s and played guitar and wrote songs for Chicken Bone, a newgrass project during the early 2000s. Lately he's played bass and been the contributing songwriter with the Americana band, Flatland Tourists. That band was voted the 2015 Carolina's Americana Band of the Year by the Carolina Music Awards. Their debut single was ranked #15 in the Roots Music Report Top 200 Americana Singles of 2015, and the debut record was ranked number 62 in the Roots Music Report Top 200 Americana Albums of 2015. Winchester's current solo project is a blend of new original tunes all derived from works of literature combined with spoken word pieces back by music. The CD will be paired with a book to be released in 2017 that will feature lyrics to the songs, the spoken word pieces, plus short stories and essays that are inspired or derived from other artists' music. The book will also include short annotation highlighting the connections to the respective multi-media pieces that inspired the written or recorded works. Winchester also offers writing workshops for both fiction and songs.
