Dixie Chicken
Dixie Chicken - A Roots Rock Experience Dixie Chicken is a seven-piece band based in Toronto, Canada celebrating the music of roots rock giants Little Feat, taking its name from one of their most popular songs...you guessed: 'Dixie Chicken', the 1973 hit written & sung by Lowell George with a young Bonnie Raitt on backing vocals. Leader John Fraser Findlay (guitar/vocals) & Jay Speziale (bass/vocals), both die-hard Little Feat fans since early youth, have special connections to the band: In 1997, Jay recorded a CD with Little Feats drummer Ritchie Hayward in Toronto & more recently John invited Bill Payne, Feats co-founder & keyboard player to play on his IN2 The Spirit instrumental jazz & blues CD (2013). The band have, in their own words, 'worked incredibly hard' on the deets, lifting cuts off of studio and live albums, including Waiting For Columbus & Neon Park. With five singers in the band including Megan Hawley, the band covers the Feats repertoire as far back as the early 70's into the 80's Craig Fuller 'Let It Roll' hit era and also the later 90's when Shawn Murphy lent her roadhouse pipes and sass to the band. Dixie Chicken's monthly Thursday night gig at the Orbit Room in Toronto has been packed since the beginning. The band attracts an 'all ages' crowd with its swampy grooves, southern-fried harmonies & high energy performances (it's true Little Feat were an LA band however...). Currently the band is in the studio re-frying some 70's standards à la Little Feat and has a few Feats-inspired originals up its sleeve to be recorded as well for their up & coming CD.
