Demo Cates

Demo Cates is a two-time Juno Award–nominated saxophonist, vocalist, songwriter, composer, actor, and producer whose career has spanned more than five decades across music, theatre, television, and film. Born in Detroit, Michigan, Cates grew up surrounded by the legendary Motown sound, where his passion for music was nurtured from an early age. His signature blend of smooth jazz, soul, R&B, funk, and expressive vocals has earned him recognition on both sides of the Canada–U.S. border. Beginning his professional career in the 1970s, Cates performed throughout Detroit before relocating to Toronto, Canada, where he became a respected figure in the Canadian music scene. As both an accomplished saxophonist and vocalist, he built a reputation for captivating audiences with his soulful performances, dynamic stage presence, and exceptional musicianship. In 1981, Demo Cates helped make Canadian music history as a collaborator on Rap the Night Away, recognized as one of Canada’s earliest full-length rap recordings. Contributing rap lyrics, background vocals, songwriting, and creative ideas, he played a role in helping introduce a new musical movement that would grow into today’s Canadian hip-hop and R&B scene. As a recording artist, Cates received two Juno Award nominations for R&B/Soul Recording of the Year, recognizing his outstanding contributions to Canadian music and establishing him as one of the country’s respected R&B and soul artists. Beyond the recording studio, Demo Cates has enjoyed an accomplished acting career. He performed on Broadway as King Curtis in Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story and, while living in New York, studied Method Acting at the renowned Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute. He later joined the original Canadian company of Disney’s The Lion King, where he performed in the cast while serving as understudy for both Mufasa and Pumbaa. His commanding performances ultimately led him to assume the role of Mufasa, a role he portrayed through 2004. His acting career also includes appearances in film, television, numerous national commercials, and television specials. As a songwriter and composer, Cates has written music for the popular animated television series The Busy World of Richard Scarry and Caillou, demonstrating his versatility as a writer across multiple genres and audiences. Throughout his remarkable career, Demo Cates has collaborated with distinguished musicians, producers, and performers while continually evolving as an artist. Whether performing on concert stages, Broadway, television, or in the recording studio, he has remained committed to creating music that speaks to the heart. Today, although Inclusion Body Myositis (IBM), a rare progressive muscle disease, has brought his live performing career to a close, it has not diminished his passion for music. Cates continues to write, record, and produce new music, embracing modern technology while inspiring others through his resilience, creativity, and unwavering dedication to his craft.
