Dee Calhoun (Screaming Mad Dee)
Dee Calhoun is a veteran of the international doom metal scene and was the final voice of cult heavyweights Iron Man. Now signed to the legendary Combat Records label, he has forged a distinct solo path that blends doom's weight and atmosphere with the intimacy of a singer-songwriter.
Armed with only his voice, acoustic guitar, and raw storytelling, Dee delivers what many have called acoustic doom — songs steeped in darkness, redemption, and the grit of lived experience. His performances are haunting yet deeply human, channeling the heavy spirit of doom metal through stripped-down arrangements that hit as hard emotionally as any wall of amps.
Known to fans as “Screaming Mad Dee,” Dee has toured internationally, released acclaimed albums under both band and solo banners, and earned a reputation as one of the most powerful voices in underground heavy music. His work resonates — not just with metal audiences — but also with listeners who crave authenticity, intensity, and soul in songwriting.
Imagine Johnny Cash walking the same shadowed roads as Black Sabbath — that’s where you’ll find Dee Calhoun.
As an author, Dee has also built a distinctive voice in literature, with work blending dark imagination and folklore. His stories often grow directly out of his songwriting, weaving together themes of sin, myth, and the supernatural.
His published works include the short story collections Tales of the Screaming and Mad & Down the Rabid Hole, the novella Jesus, Devil, Deed (adapted from his own song of the same name), the novelette collection Old Scratch Comes to Appalachia, and the novels One Whore's Town and Luman.
Beyond the recordings and the written page, Calhoun’s storytelling extends into dramatic voice work for the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society and narration for documentaries such as Metal Missionaries and True American Black Metal.
Born, raised, and still living in Maryland, Dee continues to create across multiple mediums—music, prose, and voice—always driven by the same instinct: to tell powerful, unsettling stories that stay with his audience long after the last note or final line.
