Singer/songwriter Jake Hemming's late night collaborations with close friends Derek Jackman (drums) and Mike Bergstrom (bass), began in Bellingham Washington around 2004, and took on the name Big Sur in 2006. Steve Norman (pedal steel, trumpet, guitars) was introduced the summer of 2008 for the bands first record, an EP titled 'Women'. Kat Bula (fiddle, vocals, mandolin) frequently sat in as a guest musician in 2009 and joined the band as a full time member in 2010. With the influence of Norman and Bula, Big Sur has established a role in the Northwest indie folk scene, sharing bills with notable artists such as Loch Lomand, Ravenna Woods, Sera Cahoone, Grand Hallway, Drew Grow and the Pastors Wives, Kelli Schaefer, The Moondoggies, Lemolo, and many more. On July 22nd Big Sur released the much anticipated record 'two songs' and were featured on Sound on the Sound (a Seattle music blog) with I'm Not Leaving as song of the week, and Seattle Show Gal (featured show and release). Engineered and shaped by Gary Mula at the Bani-Love studio (in the Columbia City Theater), 'two songs' has bawling vocal harmonies, weeping pedal steel, paired down orchestral sections, and a sad awkward sweetness akin to Mazzey Star meets Bobby Bare Jr. A full length release is expected later this year (2011).
