Q: What do believe lies at the root of people's apathy in the face of the decay of social justice and the rise of the encroaching police state?
A: Good question, one that I ask myself daily, & is one that I could write a book about, well, actually I did, but I'm still not sure that I completely grasp the answer. I'll assume that you're asking specifically about America here, so the basic answer here would be three-fold... First, the educational system in this country is designed to teach you to conform, as was laid out in the modern school system's patriarchal text, Benjamin Bloom's 'Taxonomy of Educational Objectives'. We are fairly well quite literally taught not to think for ourselves. Second, people feel that they cannot effect a change, or that they don't have the time for anything but their daily routines, & that is largely true, & our society is largely designed that way. Ironically enough, being a musician, your timing was perfect for my answer to this feeling that people may have. I just posted a picture today with a recent quote of mine - 'Only when we relinquish the belief that we can change the world, do we lose our power to do so.' Third, I believe that people are lulled into a false sense of security lately, because a life of relative security, comfort, & freedom are all most of us have ever known, & think that 'things will always be the same'. The tide does seem to be turning as of late, with people becoming more active with, for example, The Occupy Movement, & more vocal online. History has shown us that there is an inherent danger intertwined with liberty that requires our vigilance, I only hope that we can Unite in purpose & resolve before history repeats itself...
