Bio

With a vocal style that encompasses the soul of Etta James, and Carmen McRae, the modernity of Holly Cole and the playfulness of Jann Arden, Maureen Washington evokes comparison to some of the great female Jazz singers of our time yet remains one of a kind.
Maureen Washington songstress for a variety of different ensembles, began her music career in Prince George where she sang in a funk, blues, swing, jazz band named BOP, who recorded an EP, taught Jazz clinics, and played local venues and festivals. The band BOP was widely acclaimed in the area as the best dance band, performing rearranged classics and lively originals. Along with the band she also performed for restaurants and corporate events with pianist David Sproule.

Now based in Victoria, Maureen performs with many different configurations: from duos to sextets at several high end venues around Vancouver Island. She also performed at 3 events during 2008 International Victoria Jazz Fest.

Maureen has worked extensively in the music industry, as a singer songwriter, vocal instructor, performer, and has hosted and performed main stage for 4 years (2004 - 2007) at the Prince George International Folk Fest, sharing the stage with Bruce Cockburn, Janis Ian, Martyn Joseph and twice hosted festival clinics one with Florida's Lee Boys and Ruthie Foster and a second with Amy Millan on female songwriters.

Early in her career Maureen also hosted a musicians showcase, providing an opportunity for local talent to be seen by the public.

Her discography includes a sold out Christmas album "Baby it's Cold Outside" 2005 "BOP" 2004 along with "Fly Away Be At Rest" 2004 and "Beyond the Veil" 2003; these two were self produced.

Maureen Washington, Jazz and Blues Diva, lead singer for Jazz-Funk Band “Maureen Washington and Like Minded People” and powerful moving song writer; has been performing captivating shows throughout British Columbia.

Based in Victoria, Maureen Washington’s voice captures the romance of popular ‘standards' from the past with a fresh new sound and style.  The vocals are warm, deep and pure.  Maureen takes you on a journey of stories of love gone right and stories of love gone wrong, she is impressive and enchanting, you’ll be drawn away by the pure soul that resonates in her music from her own personal life.
Maureen Washington entertains audiences and gains their attention and respect by her honest humble approach. She is extremely warm, funny and approachable, by the end of the evening you feel that you have found a new best friend.

Maureen Washington and Like Minded People
have an eclectic set list playing grooving songs from the 60’s and 70’s to originals that are so catchy you'll  hear them playing in your head long after the show is over. An evening with this band let’s you dance the night away.
The bassist, Ryan Rock, lays down some deep riffs to anchor the band, The horn player Eric Hughes, plays lines weaving in and out of the melody, stretching the boundary. Lead guitarist Daniel Cook, plays with a fluidity that takes you on a journey, you can't just listen, you experience it, along with drummer Chris Coldwell, who spices, funks, swings, and keeps the party moving all night long, along with the newest member Steven Franke who brings the  flavour with the Rhodes and adds the authenticity of popular songs from the past and finally their lead vocalist, Maureen Washington who has an electrifying energetic stage presence and adds power under great control to each piece. She can belt out with the best of them, and then tone down to a sultry, smoky, intimate, ear-stroking kind of sweetness unlike any other singer in BC.

When Like Minded People play, people have fun. The band will dash headlong into improvisation but does not stray from their prime purpose: to be the most fun you can have with your clothes on. A performance is usually filled with audience interaction, witty stage banter, and an atmosphere that makes you wish you had told more friends to come out, while being glad you didn't so you have something to brag about.
From the first few bars, you know you are in for a real treat. Push the seats back and make room to dance, it is going to be a fun night! Like Minded People cover the broadest spectrum of musical styles and some of the greatest songs of all time that somehow culminate into a fresh sound. But cover tunes are only part of their set list. The band further showcases their talents as they perform their own original music, a fusing of smooth sultry jazz with hot Latin beats, down-home blues and energetic funk. With Maureen Washington and Like Minded People you don’t listen to music,  you experience it.
