It's time once more for my monthly Ocean Island Friday. I always look forward to seeing familiar faces and meeting new ones, so I hope you'll come out, share a pitcher and enjoy some of Victoria's best emerging artists. This month, I am pretty freaking excited to have Anna Frances Music joining us. I heard Anna play at a charity event a few months ago and I just loved her strong, soulful voice (which reminded me of Stevie Nicks), singing gorgeous original and cover tunes over both guitar and keyboard. So good. Also ready to rock your world is the talented young Corey Francis Music with his bluesy, raw roots sound and sweet grunge-tinted vocal styles. We're glad to have him back! No cover - admission by donation. Seating is limited so you might want to come early to get a good one. As usual, Ocean Island has cheap and very tasty food and bevvies available for your pleasure. Come and enjoy the warm, intimate atmosphere of an evening of music with friends. *** Hatchling is a classical and jazz trained musician who took up the piano at age six and has been writing songs ever since. Her style is a sweet and smoky blend of jazz, blues, soul, folk, trip-hop and dance. Fans have compared her voice to the likes of Norah Jones, and Tracey Thorn of Everything But The Girl. Her poetic lyrics range from gorgeous and complex metaphor to heartbreaking simplicity. Hatchling wears no armour over her heart or her eyes when she gives her raw and revealing performances. Her deepest pleasure is to connect to the hidden emotions of her audience. Come, listen, and be moved. http://www.hatchlingmusic.com/ *** If someone asks you what music in Canada sounds like send them to see Anna Frances. A native of the whole country, Anna has called Prince Edward Island, Quebec, Nova Scotia, and now British Columbia home. True to her wandering roots Anna’s music explores more than one shore, stretching from pulsing ballads to witty folk. Whether strumming catchy melodies on her guitar or dragging her heart out on the piano, Anna puts it all out there for you to see. Her aptly named debut EP, Heart, Meet Sleeve, speaks to the broken hearts and enduring love that inspire her writing. http://www.annafrances.bandcamp.com/ *** Singer/songwriter Corey Francis hails from Sarnia, Ontario and has been making music, 14 years' strong. Former member of Handsome Distraction, now a solo outfit with guests, his original repertoire shows subtle influences of the Rolling Stones, Taj Mahal, Townes Van Zandt, and has been known to play covers, in loving tribute. Keep your eye and ear on this one; his catchy and unique soulful blues/folk sound invites repeat listening, guaranteed to get stuck in your head, leave you wanting more. http://coreyfrancis.bandcamp.com/

Hatchling's second Ocean Island Friday of 2014 is on the way, and I'm pleased as punch to announce this month's musical guests. Back for a repeat performance is the beautiful Arwen Ainsley, recently selected as a performer at yoUnlimited's first "Women and Song" event, a showcase of local female musical talent. Arwen's pure, vulnerable vocals and poetic lyrics will take you on a journey to the center of your own heart. Also joining us will be Corey Francis and his band, bringing us some bluesy acoustic folk-rock to get our heads bobbing and our feet tapping. No cover - admission by donation. Seating is limited so you might want to come early to get a good one. As usual, Ocean Island has cheap and very tasty food and bevvies available for your pleasure. She resonates with the joy, suffering, and love that surround her, and this experience of the world leaks out in notes, words and haunting melodies. https://soundcloud.com/arwen-ainsley *** Singer/songwriter Corey Francis hails from Sarnia, Ontario and has been making music, 14 years' strong. Hatchling is having a little trouble containing herself this time 'round because she has scored some smokin'-hot singer-songwriter and storyteller talent for her third evening at Ocean Island. If you've come to one of these nights before, you'll already know it's a great time - an intimate, friendly environment in which to enjoy the sweet serenades of emerging local talent. Please join us for this special show, so you can someday say "I saw her when". No cover - donations gratefully accepted. Seating is limited so you might want to come early! Cheap and tasty food and bevvies are available for your pleasure. *** Hatchling is a classical and jazz trained musician who took up the piano at age six and has been writing songs ever since. Her brand of intelligent pop--combining razor-sharp lyrics with seriously catchy tunes--is all too rare. Then there's her voice: warm, yet wistful, natural, yet incredibly polished. All in all, she's a contender for the ranks of legendary artists like Aimee Mann and Joni Mitchell. Kaya's wry-yet-romantic songs about sober self-scrutiny and love-gone-not-quite-right will speak to anyone who ever stayed up late listening to music so sad it makes you feel good. As Ron Sexsmith put it: "Kaya Fraser has a lovely voice and a natural songwriting ability." Listen for yourself to hear what that combination can do. http://www.kayafraser.com/ *** Sarah Elizabeth has been singing songs since she was knee-high to a grasshopper, as her grandmother would say. After years of choral groups and musical theatre, she picked up a guitar in university and began crafting her own tunes, as well as wandering across the globe from Thailand to Halifax to Africa and Northern BC. Her songs also drift… from the humorous to the heart-breaking, and reflect her search for adventure and home. Sometimes there's a ukulele thrown into the mix too. And, on occasion, a glockenspiel.
