About
As an independent artist, Dahlia (pronounced DALE-yuh) knows all about hard work. She does it all...as singer, songwriter, performer, she records, publishes, markets and distributes her music from her record label Squirrelly Girl Music. A natural performer since age five, a high-ranking finalist in several international songwriting competitions and a Grant MacEwan Music Program graduate, Canadian singer/songwriter Dahlia Wakefield is a standout talent with one self-titled EP, two full-length CDs (Close To Home and Down This Road) and several songs released on various compilation discs.
Dahlia’s music features catchy hooks, heart-felt lyrics and memorable melodies, combining pop, rock, a twinge of blues, and modern alt-country with an edgy kick, reminiscent of a mix of Jewel, Jann Arden, Michelle Branch, Shania Twain, Faith Hill, Sass Jordan, Heart, and many more of her vast influences. It has been said that the AC acronym for Adult Contemporary really stands for Almost Country, and Dahlia’s genre blending and bending style between pop, rock and country is a testimony to that theory.
Her voice, capable of interesting complexity, grabs you immediately with its powerful dynamics, passionate expression and provocative emotion. Whether live or on her recordings, she pours her soul into vocal performances that has been said to immediately captivate listeners. Dahlia’s natural charisma lends to a great stage show, and her rich voice and contemporary-with-roots style allows her music to fit comfortably into almost any radio play-list or program. For many years, Dahlia has given her time and talent to perform at telethons, showcases, and festivals. She has also performed with many established musicians such as Grammy award-winning Albert Lee, Johnny Hiland; Will Ray of the Hellecasters, Kyle Rhodes, Kennedy Jenson; and has opened for Prism. For the past seven years, she has been gigging with Edmonton trio ‘The X-Factor’ at casinos and venues in Edmonton and surrounding areas as well as Brass Bedpost.
Dahlia was born in Cebu City, the Philippines, was raised in Maidsone, Saskatchewan, has lived on both sides of the border city Lloydminster, and now makes her home in Edmonton, Alberta. When she’s not writing, performing, or promoting her music, she always makes time to be with her family and have fun with her daughter Jasmine, who has been showing a natural affinity for music at 2 1/2 years of age! Dahlia recently gave birth to her second daughter, Jade Christina Rooney...who was born August 21, 2009. Even at her young age, one can tell that even she appreciates music!
Currently, Dahlia has been collaborating and recording new songs with Jim Stoeber from Tegancat Music in Winnipeg, Gerry Dere from The Master Factory in Edmonton, Mad Maxx from M3 Records in Ohio, and Tawmy Schaaf from Edmonton with the hopes of releasing a new CD in the Fall of 2010. It will be interesting to see what the future holds.
