Todd May with the Mooncussers

From Performer Magazine http://performermag.com/2013/02/28/todd-may-rickenbacker-girls/ “As good as Americana gets” "a voice reminiscent of Steve Earle at his jagged best" "If Rickenbacker Girls is any indication, Todd May’s prolific output should include more solo ventures." Dust of Daylight Rickenbacker Girls Puts May the territory of Steve Earle in singer / songwriter mode and Joe Pug. Todd May has delivered the year's best album so far. And it comes guaranteed high up when I should take stock in December. Dust of Daylight http://www.musikkbloggen.no/2013/02/todd-may-rickenbacker-girls/ From Americana Gazette: Todd May ♪♪♪♪♪ His style and voice remind me of the music coming out of Austin Texas today ala Band of Heathens, Hayes Carl, and Corb Lund. It’s got a real earthy sound and backboneto it. May has the talent and the chops to make a big splash if he can get out and get seen and heard. Rickenbacker Girls is a great start! With a few tours and a few breaks Todd May could easily climb the Americana Charts and sit right along those Texas boys! Twangville: May is clearly well-versed in music history. Beyond Williams and the Byrds, there are traces of the Allman Brothers, Steve Earle and a host of other classic rock and country artists tucked in the crevices of this record. Yet May stands strongly in his own right, a talented story-teller who imbues his music with warmth and authenticity. http://twangville.com/13718/mayers-playlist-for-february-2013-part-1/ Mooncussers is a southern soul influenced guitar rock band. Stemming from experienes in power pop rock and classic Americana, MC blends pop, rock, americana and roots soul, with an emphasis on layering guitar work and a solid rhythm section. With southern ties within the band (Chris hails form North Carolina, Todd from Kentucky, McGann fom WV) it is only natural that the MC sound incorporates some familiar southern comfort vibes. The rhythm section can be as tight and groovey as any Stax recording, and Jamey and Mark - astute students of the guitar - resemble the best of Black Crowes ("Southern Harmony" era), Drive By Truckers, and classic southern-inspired riffs. That does not define their sound, however. MC is as much at home with the Motor City as Memphis, to Minneapolis for their SST/Replacements influences, and East Coast for Sonic Youth/Dinosaur Jr. At times, MC can produce simple pop rock ready for Saturday night, heavier sounds for the darker hours, or easy like Sunday morning tunes that could be played alongside Chet Baker. Press: "Dynamic, soulful and pure is the way one could label the spirit of this band. The Mooncussers are cool because they are just good at what they do." - The Independent Music Scene "an alt-country all-star team of sorts . . . stirred by the "No Depression" school of rock, there's something satisfying for you in these twangy barroom ballads. They go down a lot easier than the whiskey that undoubtedly inspired them." - Chris Deville, Alive! "May digs deep into his Kentucky roots, cranking out twangy tunes . . . like Counting Crows if Adam Duritz had balls ... some Replacements-style grit, and like the Drive-By Truckers, he’s as much at home with a wailing electric guitar as he is with acoustic picking." - Joel Oliphant, The Other Paper "What they maintain is an appealing, highly listenable roots-rock sound influenced by decades-old artists and the grit of AM radio." -Kevin Joy, Dispatch
