Salt Lick'n Hicks

A bit folky, a bit rootsy. Like a big squalling south easterly wind this band love to mix it up, sometimes quiet and delicate and other times raw like mullet on a sushi plate...but always true. The Salt Lick'n Hicks are: Clara Durbidge – Lead Vocals, Guitar, Percussion Chris Hutton – Guitar , Lap Slide, Mandolin, Fiddle (and all things with strings) We add a drummer and bass player as required. Clara Durbidge and Chris Hutton formed Salt Lick’n Hicks in January 2011, when they organised a charity event to raise funds for people affected by the January floods. Over the past year Salt Lick’n Hicks have continued writing and performing their meld of roots, blues and folk music at a variety of venues in South East Queensland. Clara Durbidge is a fourth generation Stradbroke Islander and has lived on the island all her life. Growing up on an island, her life is influenced and revolves around weather patterns, tides, swell size and most importantly community. All this comes through in her music. Not just lyrical content, it’s the ebb and flow of melodies, it’s the change in her musical styles and it’s the understanding that "raw" is real in all it’s honesty. With influences such as Texas Tea, Tracy Chapman, Michelle Shocked and Jewel, Clara's vocal melodies can embrace the sweetness of an angel through to the punch of a woman with a message that wants to be heard and not ashamed to deliver. Chris Hutton, a classically trained violinist, went on tour with his first rock band in the back of a panel van when he was 14 years old. Playing in many bands over the years Chris plays a number acoustic instruments adding to rich flavour of Salt Lick’n Hick’s melodies.
