“What better way to ring in the new year than with the positive vibrations of Bob Marley’s music? On December 30 The Wailers perform live at The Chance in Poughkeepsie and fans can expect to hear all the uplifting classics they love. The show, presented by Woodstock-based promoter Upstate Reggae, features bassist Aston Barrett — better known as Family Man — who was part of the original band when it was formed in 1969. That year, the Wailers began backing the then-unknown Bob Marley. Two years after, the group was signed to Island Records and played on Marley’s breakout record “Natty Dread” (1974). Since then, they’ve continued to tour around the world, including many lesser-traveled locales. Opening acts include Stinking Gringos, Yanks, Outernational, and Royal Khaoz; the latter takes the stage just before the headliners, performing a blend of original reggae, dub, and all-out dance music guaranteed to make you break a sweat before the main event is even announced.”

“During a walk down Woodstock’s Tinker Street on any given day, you’ll find a row of tourist-friendly shops decked out with tie-dye clothes, music icons, and some kind of homage to Rastafarian culture — be it a flag, shirt, or a simple Bob Marley tapestry. That village loves its positive reggae vibes. So it’s no surprise how well-received the Bronx-based reggae band Royal Khaoz is every time they come to town. (Which, lucky for locals, is somewhat often.) The group played Woodstock’s Colony Café on November 5, raising the mercury in the chilly village’s thermometer for a couple of hours. They kept the crowd dancing with a combination of original reggae, rocksteady and roots songs — with a tinge of soulful R&B — and a couple of covers, including a strong finishing performance of Bob Marley’s “Is This Love.” Each musician brings lively talent to the stage; every song is uplifting, encouraging of a conscious lifestyle and impossible to not dance to. ”

“Three vocalists — Bama, Bless and Jay — share lead, with voices ranging from sweet and syrupy, to strong as gospel, to staccato with rhythmic flow. Bassist Phantom holds the grooves down with a smooth, funky backbeat and strong undertones. Guitar and keyboard notes switch from light and poppy to slightly psychedelic with a hint of blues. As for the message behind their lyrical content, the band says they aim to “educate, awake, inspire and motivate the younger generation without the repetition of boring pep talks and orders.” Basically, they want to get you feelin’ irie. If you haven’t had the chance to check out Royal Khaoz, the band plays weekly shows in Brooklyn and has an approaching upstate performance at Snug Harbor in New Paltz on November 23.
