EXPERIENCE I’ve toured the US twice as the lead singer and bass player of pop/rock power trio 7k. Along the way I’ve played everything from Rhianna to Garth Brooks to AC/DC for thousands of people across the country. I’ve recorded and released 3 albums, taught bass, guitar and vocal lessons, and coached bands and songwriters. PHILOSOPHY A friend once told me, “there’s no money above the fifth fret.” I don’t know if that’s true, but it’s close. My approach to bass includes three core values: 1.) Serve the song: I think of playing bass as going over the outline with a big crayon; mostly I help define the space, then I let the other kids fill it up. 2.) Obey The Groove: I listen for that notch and let the notes fall out of the bass and into it, rather than carving out my own notch by force. 3.) Lock with the Drummer: we should sound like one dude with four arms. One groovy half-octopus. I find these restrictions inspire satisfying creativity and effective bass parts that fit the tune. HEROES My bass heroes include Drew Roulette of Dredg, Arion Salazar of Third Eye Blind, Tim Commerford of Rage Against the Machine/Audioslave, Sting, and Geddy Lee of Rush.
