Jelle Paulusma (born November 26, 1965, in Sittard, Netherlands) is a distinguished singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer whose career spans nearly four decades. Known for his lyrical depth, melodic originality and restless creativity, Paulusma’s musical journey has shaped and enriched the Dutch and European indie music landscape since the late 1980s.
Origins & Daryll-Ann (1988–2004)
Paulusma’s musical story began in 1988 when, still in his teens, he co-founded the alternative rock band Daryll-Ann in Ermelo with schoolmates including Anne Soldaat and his brother Coen Paulusma. The band quickly became a defining voice of Dutch indie rock, blending radiant guitar pop with introspective songwriting and earning praise from critics and fans alike.
From their first album Renko (1992) to Don’t Stop (2004), Daryll-Ann released six studio albums and one live record, becoming one of the flagship acts of the then-emerging Excelsior Recordings label. They played major Dutch festivals such as Pinkpop and Lowlands and toured across Europe, sharing stages with internationally acclaimed acts like The Smashing Pumpkins and The Verve. Their music was widely admired by the British music press in the 1990s, where singles like Stay were highlighted by publications such as Melody Maker.
Although the band’s commercial breakthrough overseas proved elusive — leading to their decision to disband in 2004 during the tour following Don’t Stop — Daryll-Ann’s influence on the Dutch alternative scene was profound, and their albums are still celebrated for their emotional resonance and musical craftsmanship.
Solo Career & Artistic Exploration
Following the end of Daryll-Ann, Paulusma embarked on a solo career that allowed him to explore his artistic sensibilities more personally and broadly. His solo debut Here We Are appeared in 2006, revealing a more introspective and experimental side, grounded in evocative lyricism and atmospheric arrangements. Subsequent albums such as iRECORD (2008) and Up On The Roof (2011) further showcased his range, from lush, melodic pop to introspective singer-songwriter narratives. Pulling Weeds (2014) received strong critical acclaim in the Dutch press for its adventurous sonic palette, and Somehow Anyhow (2019) affirmed Paulusma’s stature as one of the Netherlands’ most thoughtful and enduring songwriters.
Alongside his own releases, Paulusma has composed music for commercials and international documentary films, expanding his creative footprint beyond the traditional album format.
Her Majesty & Touring Life
In parallel with his solo work, Paulusma became a central figure in the celebrated Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young tribute band Her Majesty from around 2015 onward. With Her Majesty he toured extensively throughout the Netherlands, bringing classic harmonies and rich musicianship to theaters and concert halls and earning admiration for his vocal versatility and deep respect for the repertoire. His involvement with Her Majesty marked a period of intense performance activity that enriched his live experience and expanded his audience.
Daryll-Ann Reunion & Recent Projects
Paulusma’s connection to his roots continued to deepen in the 2010s. In 2014, Daryll-Ann reunited for a major tour celebrating the band’s legacy, playing clubs and festivals across the Netherlands to enthusiastic audiences.
After years of reflection and sporadic reunions, the original band came together again in 2024 with a bold new chapter: the release of Spring, their first new album in twenty years, and accompanying performances that blend the band’s classic essence with fresh energy. This milestone reflects both a return to form and a testament to the enduring chemistry between Paulusma and his longtime collaborators.
Legacy & Ongoing Work
Today, Jelle Paulusma stands as a singular figure in Dutch music, a restless creator whose work with Daryll-Ann, his solo recordings, collaborative projects and theatrical tours has left an indelible mark. Whether crafting timeless songs, exploring new musical terrains, or performing beloved classics with tribute band Her Majesty, Paulusma continues to evolve, inspire and connect with audiences across generations.
