Bio
A Baltimore resident, fusing alternative rock with his native pentatonic scale, to bring you a cross-genre fusion of Middle-Eastern flavored songs crafted in a familiar rock sound.
About
Originally from Sudan, showed interest in music at a very young age. Before going to pre-school, his favorite thing to do was to sit and listen to his tapes, which were all western singers such as Michael Jackson, Lionel Ritchie, and even The Beatles.
During his first stay in America (age 9) his music teacher Ms. Mathews noticed his interested in playing songs by ear on her piano after hearing them in class. After a brief hearing exercise, she noticed that he also sang. From that point on her little Sudanese student became one her main characters in her forthcoming musical school plays.
At age 12 Egypt claimed his residence for 6 years. During those hard years or re-learning his native Arabic language, and getting accustomed to a completely different culture, caused a lot of frustration. His only refuge was poetry & music. Writing poetry became a very welcomed escape, and it wasn't long before he decided to 'sing' his poetry. Not having an instrument did provide difficulty, but if there is a will, there is a way. He started drumming, on anything. He would gather different objects to make different sounds, books, pencils, tapes, sheets of paper, anything he could get his hands on, get a beat going & started singing. Not having a recording device also presented a problem, so in fear of forgetting the songs, he would keep singing the song over and over until he memorized it completely.
He started saving up from his allowance, and bought a walkman with recording capabilities to record his songs.
At the age of 17, still stuck in Egypt, he spoke to his mother about buying an acoustic guitar. His reasoning for that instrument was mainly due to the environment he was living in, a very small space, with many people. An acoustic guitar was light to carry, and didn't need electricity. Even though the rest of the family told her not to get him the guitar, that he was just going through a phase, his mother saw something special in his request. Because of their economical situation, she could only afford to buy him a used guitar. In fact, it was string-less. He took his unused guitar and went to the local Sudanese Club, there he befriended Bany Wany & Khaled Nouri, the 2 men who took him under their wing and taught him all the could. They taught him a few basic chords, and couple of Bob Marley songs, all in return of a packet of cigarettes & a cup of tea.
October 30th 1998, marks a life changing day. It was the day he finally landed back in his beloved America. Armed with his new love life, and the still tender skills of the guitar, he now has to yet again re-accustom him-self to the culture. After arriving, all he could do was experiment with the few chords that he knew, and try to practice as much as he can. In 2000 a friend he met at work Ali Jaffar, heard the song "Description" and automatically became a fan. Till this day Ali shows up at mOsno's shows, and always the first to give the thumbs up (or down) at the new matterial. He has been an essential positive force in mOsno's music and performances.
2004 was the 1st time mOsno plays in public, it was at an Open Mic in College Park, MD. A place called The College Perk. It was one of the scariest, yet most enjoyable experiences to him. Later that year Seeno, a dear friend of mOsno came and played the same open mic. Brennan Khunes, the open mic host, noticed something about the two and suggested they try playing together as a group the next week, that collaboration would start "Owtar", who become one of The Perk's favorite bands. With there very international rhythms provided by Meezo, mOsno's younger brother, made them very unique.
Now in 2009, Seeno has a full length studio album, Meezo got accepted to Berklee college in Boston, and mOsno is taking the Baltimore music scene by storm.
He has become a member of the Baltimore Songwriter's Association, and has been gigging all over the state. He also become the Djembe player for two of Baltimore's most gifted songwriters, Teporah, & Sahffi. Need less to say that these will open up many doors for this rising Sudanese rockstar.
