Mike Luno Band

Mike Luno Band is a guitar-bass-drums-vocals 3-piece rock act based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The music has liberal elements of funk and fusion with overtones of reggae and prog occasionally sneaking in. To put you in the stylistic ball park: think Sting meets the Chili Peppers, Leonard Cohen co-writes the Led Zeppelin reunion album, the Police get dirty, or Rush jams with the Dave Matthews Band and Maroon 5. While the music might have you tapping your toes or dancing around your living room, the lyrics have no throwaway, no filler, and at times no mercy - colourful observations on the contradictions, conundrums, frustrations and self-defeat of human behaviour. What's your poison now? The Mike Luno Band is here to describe it with a smile and a groove. MLB believes in giving every audience its money's worth, and a live performance has the energy and musical duties for twice the number of musicians in the band. This, in fact, is their reason for being - from an appetite for music with powerful, unapologetic musicianship, groove with fire, thought-provoking lyrics and compositions made to stand the test of time, they aspire to be the band they would want to see and hear themselves. Drummer Leippi and guitarist/vocalist Luno began their musical partnership in Victoria, BC back in 1996. Forming a band purely for the fun of playing challenging covers and trying out a few of Mike's original tunes, the band was happily surprised to find receptive audiences for their strange musical brew. Their covertune repertoire ranged from Paul Simon to the Screaming Headless Torsos, and Mike's originals crossed sub-genres almost as disparate. Leippi and Luno moved their operation to the much bigger city of Vancouver in 2010 and released their first album under the Mike Luno Band banner - "Get Inside" (to a favourable review in the Mar 29's issue of the Georgia Straight). The band continues to attract a local following, and has performed at the Princeton Pub, the Railway Club, Comox Long Bar and Grill, Toby's, the Rowing Club, the Roxy, the Backstage Lounge, and for Cambie Street's Summer Sizzler event. In Sept 2013, Mike Luno Band won the finals for the Supernova Van Sessions competition, beating out over 50 local bands to win the grand prize round.
